Stanley Russell “Russ” Hawkins, age 83, of Bloomington, died Friday afternoon at his residence. Born July 22, 1927 in Sanders, Indiana, he was the son of Sherman and Sylvia (McGlothlin) Hawkins. He graduated from University High School. After graduation he went to work for R. H. Marlin as a truck driver and then served as a Corporal during W.W. II in the U.S. Air Force where he was a radio control operator serving in Germany, France and Alaska. While in Alaska, he also served as a pilot. Over his working life he was a salesman for Filter Queen vacuum cleaners, worked at R.C.A., truck driver for Moon Freight Lines, worked as a salesman for Graham Motor Sales, City of Bloomington Utilities, Monroe County Highway Dept., was an accomadant of Cadets for the Civil Air Patrol, was a contract bus driver for M.C.C.S.C. for over 46 years, was a Pioneer Corn Detassel contractor, worked concessions at Lake Monroe, was a contractor for Monroe County Trash Disposal for four years and served as Salt Creek Township Trustee for 24 years as well as serving as a Republican Precinct Committeman for 24 years. He attended Souls Harbor Apostolic Church and Knightridge Pentecostal Church. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #1 in Paris, France.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn G. (Jones) Hawkins, of Bloomington, with whom he just celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 15, 2010; his sons, Rusty Hawkins and his significant other, Mary Ann Gac, and Dusty Hawkins and his wife, Alayna, all of Bloomington; his daughter, Rita Hawkins, of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Minnie Ann (Tommy) Vaught, Ashley Hawkins, Amber Hawkins, Weston Hawkins and Autumn Hawkins, all of Bloomington; one great-grandson, Brandon Jacob Vaught; two sisters, Maxine Carter and Peggy (Paul) Hobbs, all of Bloomington, one niece, several nephews and his faithful canine companion, Daytona. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ulice Hawkins, Thurman “Gene” Hawkins and Lester “Les” Hawkins and one sister, Marjorie Miller.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 A.M. at Salt Creek Cemetery with Bros. Russell Elkins, David Butcher and Tom Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow where the Veterans Honor Guard will provide military graveside rites. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Day Funeral Home in Bloomington.
Memorial contributions may be given to the family to help with the funeral expenses.
