It’s so hard to believe you’ve gone shining 4 years ago today.  Cairril, you’ll always be in heart, and I hold dear the fond memories of our friendship.  Your beautiful voice will always be an inspiration for me.  Rest in peace my dear friend.  I miss you.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all your kind words about my beautiful sister and best friend, Cairril. Today, 8 Jul 2023, is the first time I am seeing any of them, so I apologize for not acknowledging your sentiments sooner. 

I miss her as much today as when she first left us, and I still think of her throughout every single day. I have so many memories of her, but I can't get enough of other people's stories. Reading your collective words fills my heart, except for the Cairril-shaped hole where she rests. 💜


I will always remember my dear college friend Cairril, such an honest, caring, creative, talented, smart and vibrant friend indeed.  I miss her so much.  

How well I remember Cairril singing with the Feminist Chorus and what energy she gave to it.  And her last concert.   What a voice.  What courage.   I'm glad of the cd's that I have.  

I was always amazed and carried away by Cairril's singing and also grateful for her support of me as a writer.  She included me in one of her concerts.  What a generous and fine spirit.


i dont really have a memory, didnt even know her, but as a pagan witch as well, wanted to express my sympathies to her family.  I saw her in the paper, and want to give my support.  She appears to have been a remarkable person, with such a sweet smile.  I also support Circle Sanctuary, and will donate to them in her name when I can.  Also, candles lit to help show her the way to her next adventure in Summerland......blessed be.

So sorry for your family's loss.  Cairril was way too young, although we never met, she did a lot of work on our family tree.  It was so helpful to learn about all of our relatives.  We live kind of far away, on the east coast.  My parents lived in the Northwestern Indiana area growing up, but we would still visit the area years later.  I had often wished to have gone to a family reunion so I could meet all of you.  I was so taken with her, she was so industrious and innovative.   We went to college at almost the same time frame.  I too, feel a loss.

Still struggling to find the words to express the deep sadness and pain over my sister Cairril's passing.  A life ended too soon for sure, but also full of struggle.  I will forever miss her smile and her beautiful God given voice...not sure I will ever 'get over' the empty feeling.  Many thanks to all the people who have posted kind words and remembrances of Cairril.  It will certainly ease the sorrow our family is feeling right now.  

Like many others here, I had the good fortune of sharing some precious time with this remarkable woman.  

I hope her many loved ones will know peace and find purpose.

I met Cairril when I worked at Sunrise Greetings. She was so talented and willing to share her experiences and design knowledge. 
Sending heartfelt sympathy to her family and close friends and may they find peace in the wonderful memories  with Cairril during this difficult time. 

A conversation with Cairril was food for the mind and soul. She was energizing, raw, hilarious, compassionate, intelligent.  I loved her commitment to truth and joy, and to being her authentic self.  She was sui generis. Heartfelt condolences to her family and other friends. May her memory be a blessing to us all. 

When I think of Cairril,  I think of her amazing voice, her energy,  her   laughter.  She gave so much to the creative life of Bloomington and was  always supportive of others, giving generous words of encouragement to all of us in our different creative fields.   We have indeed lost a "shining" one.

May her perpetual light shine keep shining upon us.

My deepest sympathy to Cairril’s family and friends.  I am heartbroken to hear this tragic news.  My dear friend Cairril, you will be missed.  Your friendship meant so much to me, and I will forever cherish your smile, your laugh, and your magnificent voice.  I met you at IU decades ago, and you will live forever in my heart.  Rest In Peace my friend, May your spirit shine on.  I will always listen for your voice in the sound of the wind.  

We grew up together and I have endless memories of all the crazy stuff we did, riding bikes, playing softball, playing basketball, just everyday Midwestern kid stuff. She had an amazing voice, and her singing while we walked and rode our bikes will stick with me forever. A beautiful light that shined from within!

I am devastated to learn of Cairril’s loss, but happy that she is beyond pain, and flying free now. I’ve known Cairril over twenty years from our work together in Our Freedom and Pagan activism, to professional design work, singing together and sharing our mutual interest in mythology and folklore. We had become  closer recently as we were both navigating difficult waters, and supported each other through many changes. Cairril was a good  and loyal friend with a dazzling smile, rapier wit and a hearty laugh I can still hear, ringing out clear as a bell. I can hear echoes of that dear laughter now and see her eyes bright with excitement as she turns, blows a kiss, smiles lovingly, and drifts into the Summerlands. Blessed be, Shining Traveller. I bless her journey and say her name : Cairril Adaire Lee Mills — for what is remembered, Lives.

I remember Cairril's voice, her song, her dedication, but most of all her shining spirit. She lit the path for so many! Hail the Traveler... She will be sorely missed.

Brilliant, passionate, wonderful. She saw a need when others did not and made it manifest, over and over again.

I learned this morning that my friend Cairril died this week. It is unfathomable that such a bright light is dark, that our paths have split. She was weird, wonderful, caring, creative, and the bearer of many mysteries. I will miss our deep conversations, her laughter, and her constant thirst to learn. 

This song has come up twice, today, in my Spotify playlist, a song I'm not familiar with, from a band I'm not sure she cared for, but the words could be hers. As I listen, I hope she is at peace, and I truly hope that she knew, somewhere, somehow, how much she was loved.

We enjoyed working with her at Sunrise and in Bloomington Feminist Chorus. Cairril was passionate about expressing her beliefs through music, and gave us many years of joy and laughter.

Of course I met this beautiful soul and spirit through her voice and passion for music, her group of female singers so memorable, impactful, involved.  They did a benefit for Middle Way House and  many other nonprofits.  Someone who clearly cared and shared, gave of herself, for and to others.  And far far too young to leave us!  
My deep sorrow, she is already missed . . . I have their CD, must now listen and commemorate a life of purpose and love.  I see her bright shining smile that traveled up to her eyes, as I type this  . . .

I'm so very sad to hear about the loss of Cairril. I appreciated her wisdom and strength in so many areas. She was a benefit to our community. May she rest in peace, and I send Love and Comfort to all who knew her well.

I remember the early memories more so than the recent ones; not that we've seen each other in the past few years; the bane of being a traveler I guess. I remember meeting her in collage at IU; she was the first Edgy Girl I ever met. Fort Wayne in the 80s was not a bastion of edge. She introduced me to The Cure, and Feminist theory, paganism, and we laughed. Oh god did we laugh. For a woman who wore black and had the Robert Smith Hair of the 80s her laugh was gold; I felt special every time I heard it, doubly so If I made her laugh. I remember going back to her dorm with another friend and listening to "Standing on a Beach". I remember screaming at the gods that "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" was The Cure's 'sellout album'. She was one of my first friends I made on my own as an adult. She is LURVED and missed...


She was a kind soul. Her wit, intelligence and talent are second to none. The world will miss her.
