Phyllis A Jacobs

Phyllis Alma Jacobs died as she had wished, quickly and with family nearby, holding her dearly in their hearts. Just shy of her 90th birthday on March 27, she is survived by her sister, Janet Ross, her son Keith Jacobs of Battle Ground, WA, her son Wade McJacobs of Beaverton, OR, and three grandchildren. Devon McJacobs of Tokyo, Japan, Annie McJacobs of Los Angeles, CA, and Emily Klaege of Normal, IL.

She made a home for all who came. From feeding homemade bagels to her swim group “The Rusty Hinges” to preparing a birthday meal for her kids. The aromas always stimulated conversation. From pizza and biscuits to smelt, tongue and countless baked goods in-between she made growing up a gastric experience by simply keeping her husband away from the stove.

Besides raising her family which was her proudest accomplishment, Phyllis, known as “Jet” by family and friends, was a nurse for over 40 years. She earned the moniker “Jet” because she was known for “jetting” around the ward taking care of patients with care and compassion. She was instrumental in the cause of getting her hospital to use fitted sheets so that nurses had more time for patients.

Her generous heart led her to many volunteer activities such as serving on the Board at the local Unitarian Universalist Church and NAMI. She volunteered for organizations such as Sisters of the Road, The David Davis Mansion, and different organizations for cancer patients. She always found time for others.

If you wish to visit a place of remembrance for her, there is a bench with her name located near the amphitheater at Constitution Trail Park in Normal.

Memorial services will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington-Normal on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. Instead of flowers, Phyllis has asked for donations to be given to the church or to NAMI.
