Suzanne Coker Wingo Berry, Birmingham, died peacefully at her home on June 1, 2018, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Beth Tyler Coker of Talladega; her first husband of 26 years, the Rev. Taylor Wingo; her sister Emily Coker Jacobs and brother-in-law Leslie Jacobs, and her aunt Ann Tyler.
Suzanne is survived by her husband, Stephen Charles Berry; son, Jeff Douglass Wingo, Birmingham; daughter, Marybeth Wingo Haas (Mitchell), grandson, William Taylor Haas, granddaughter, Elizabeth Brannan Haas, Atlanta; sister Marybeth Coker Pitman (Eddie) Pensacola, FL; brother-in-law Harvey Wingo (Carolyn), Dallas, TX; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Suzanne was born and raised in Talladega, Alabama, where she graduated from Talladega High School. She was a graduate of Auburn University and a member of Phi Mu sorority. She earned additional education degrees at Alabama A&M and the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was an elementary school teacher for 27 years. Suzanne taught at McDonnell Elementary School in Huntsville, AL and Franklin Academy in Birmingham and was a reading specialist at Lee Elementary School in the Birmingham City School System. She served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary society of women educators. Always concerned for the needs of others, Suzanne’s volunteer work included the Crisis Center and the Jefferson County Council on Aging Ombudsman Program.
Suzanne was an avid reader and nature lover. She had a spirit of adventure and enjoyed camping and traveling, near and far. She saw the best in everyone and will always be remembered for her kind and loving heart. She lived life to the fullest, but her most treasured times were spent with her family and two grandchildren, the joy of her life.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 4, at 9:00 AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2870 Acton Rd., Birmingham, 35243 with a celebration of life to follow at 10:00 AM. The burial at Elmwood Cemetery will follow the service.
Suzanne’s family would like to thank the physicians and staff at UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Affinity Hospice, for their exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Birmingham.
