Madge Rachel Griffin White, 99, of Argo, Alabama, and most recently, Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2023. She was a loving wife, Mama, and Granny.
Madge was born in Jackson County, Alabama in 1923. She moved to Fort Payne at age 5 and to Birmingham at age 9. Madge attended Woodlawn High School, graduating in 1941. She married her husband of 76 years, John Pat, in 1942. Mrs. White worked as a secretary, and most recently as a church secretary for Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and a church training leader. Over the years she has been a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Springville, Spring Valley Baptist, and Central Baptist Church of Argo. Madge was a talented cook, seamstress, wordsmith, and gardener. Her favorite flowers to grow were daylilies and she loved to create new hybrid varieties.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by her parents, James N. and Lillie Mae Griffin; her brothers, Harold W. Griffin, Joe A. Griffin, James Q. R. Griffin, and Kermit C. Griffin; her son, John Patrick White, Jr.; and her husband, John Patrick White, Sr. She is survived by her daughters, Jean Hilton of Wetumpka, AL, and Kimberly Moore (David) of Durham, NC; her daughter-in-law, Florentine White of Glenn Heights, TX; her grandchildren, Becky Warren (Steve) of Coosada, AL, Elane Wilbourn of Glenn Heights, TX, Dana Watkins (Chris) of Ovilla, TX, Ian Moore of Oakland, CA, and Alec Moore of Durham, NC; 7 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. White's funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2023, at Central Baptist Church of Argo with burial following at Springville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00.
