Eva Jane Hydinger Gardner passed away on May 17, 2023, at the age of 91. She was born on August 25, 1931, in Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Sidney Nelson Gardner, her parents, Herbert and Lucile Hydinger, and her sisters, Ann Busby and Pat McVea. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her three children - Dr. Janet Gardner Alexander (Dexter), Crossville, TN; William S. (Bill) Gardner (Linda), Columbiana; and Robert N. (Bob) Gardner (Leah) Birmingham; six grandchildren - Dan Alexander (Crystal), Nolan Gardner (Amanda), Michael Alexander (Meagen), Will Gardner (Jennifer), Sara Gardner Mewborn (Marcus), and Andrea Gardner Lea (Stephen); seven great-grandchildren - James Alexander, Luke Alexander, Cole Howell, Layla Alexander, Henry Gardner, Dagan Medlock and Jameson Medlock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jane grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1949. She enjoyed being a cheerleader, singing and participating in various music groups in high school and church choirs for many years. She also attended Birmingham Southern College.
Jane had several jobs over the years, including working at a bank, owning a dry-cleaning business with her husband, and teaching kindergarten classes at the YMCA and Huffman United Methodist Church. In addition to music, she enjoyed sewing, needlework, cooking and she and Sidney also enjoyed traveling, square dancing and spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was active in many local United Methodist churches over her life, including over 40 years of membership at First United Methodist Church in Gadsden.
A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on May 20 at Lakeside Baptist Church, 2865 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL 35243. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the service will be at 11 am. Graveside service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
