James Ferrell Purnell, 86, husband of Gloria Cain Purnell, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on May 3rd, 2021. James served four years in the Navy after graduating from Red Level High School in 1952. After his time in the Navy, he attended Samford University (formerly Howard College). Rev. Purnell served at Stansel Baptist Church in Reform before attending Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Upon completing Seminary, he served several churches in Northwest Alabama, served two tenures at Stansel Baptist Church, served in Pickens County, and completed his last pastorate at Central Baptist Church in Tarrant. He formally retired in September of 2018 after serving in the ministry for 60 years. James loved train rides, coffee on the back deck with Glo, Alabama football, the Gulf Coast, Glo's German chocolate cake, Gospel music at the loudest volume, and time with loved ones. His patience and generosity were felt and appreciated by many. James is survived by his best friend and wife of 60 years, Gloria; his children Patrick (Sally) and Sally (Jonathan); his siblings Creigh (Ann), Wilda, and Mike; his grandchildren Ferrell Carter, Ella Carter, Helen Purnell, and Egan Purnell; as well as many nieces and nephews. The visitation will be held at 9:30 am at Liberty Park Baptist Church on May 6th, followed by a memorial service in the church at 10:00 am. A private burial at National Cemetery will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Park Baptist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
