Jackson Berry Bailey, 89, passed away Monday October 25, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy W. Bailey; son, Jackson (Dick) Bailey, his parents Arthur and Sara Bailey, and brother, Fred Bailey.
Jack was especially proud of his Ensley High school graduation class of 1950. He was also a proud alumnus of the University of Alabama, earning his degree in Business Administration and Commerce. Jack served as an officer with the United States Army and Army Reserves. He often expressed his appreciation for a rewarding career serving the city of Birmingham beginning with the Planning and Zoning Department, to soon serving the administration of a new mayor/council form of Birmingham government. He was then appointed as the Birmingham City Clerk, a position he retired from in 1997. Jack’s Service to the community included serving as a Boy Scout and Explorer post committee member and leader with the Birmingham Area Council.
Jack participated in the University of Alabama Alumni Association and his enthusiastic support of the University, including his participation in Tide Pride. Jack and Patsy traveled extensively. Their travels included: The Middle East, China, Europe and North America. At home, especially in recent years, he enjoyed and “directed” his yard landscape which always meant enjoyment of natural beauty and contemplation. Jack was a devoted Christian, he grew up in Ensley First United Methodist Church, and in recent years became a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
Jack is survived by son, Ric Bailey (Debbie); granddaughter, Ana Bailey (Jeff); great-grandson, Findlay Wilder Engel; daughter, Patti Bailey Howell (Billy); grandson, Patrick Howell (Morgan); and granddaughter, Elizabeth Howell Feller (John).
Funeral services with be Saturday October 30, 2021 at 11AM at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel Visitation will be one hour prior at the funeral home.
