Gladys Leonard Cummings

Gladys Leonard Cummings, 101, went home to be with the Lord on February 6, 2023. She was born November 22, 1921 to Matthew Leonard and Ida Winters Leonard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Bruce Cummings; 1 sister and 7 brothers; and 2 grandsons, George Emanuel Thomas, Jr. and Wesley Bryan Davis. Gladys is survived by her children, Janie Cummings Thomas, Elizabeth Davis, and Kathy League (Raymond); grandchildren, Stephen John Thomas (Shannon), Jeffrey Allen Davis (Susan), Raymond Dale League, Jr. (Katelyn), Joshua Brian League (Carrie); and 10 great grandchildren.

Johnnie and Gladys moved to the Birmingham area from Millport, Alabama early in their marriage and raised their 3 daughters here. She loved and devoted her life to her family and friends. Gladys was a faithful member of Hunter Street Baptist Church for many years. She taught Sunday School to special needs children for many of those years at her beloved church. She was a gifted seamstress who loved her work. Those who were recipients of her beautiful creations, still cherish them today.

The visitation will be Monday, February 13, 2023 from 12 pm until 1 pm at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. A celebration of Gladys’ life will follow at 1pm in the chapel. Gladys will be laid to rest at Birmingham’s Historic Elmwood Cemetery in Block 51.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests making donation in Gladys' memory to either Hunter Street Baptist or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
