Florence Inman Scott

Florence Isabella Inman Scott, known to all who loved her as “Issa”, died peacefully at home on March 14, 2023, after 103 years of life. Issa was born on October 19, 1919, in Ensley, Alabama, the first child of Florence Moore and Samuel Martin Inman. Issa and her three younger brothers learned from their earliest years that faith and family were the priorities for their lives. She attended Minor Elementary School and Ensley High School. Issa loved music and learned to play the piano. She used her lovely alto voice in glee club and choir and participated in musicals at school. She was one of the “Three Little Maids from School” in the “Pirates of Pinzance”.

Graduating from Ensley during the Great Depression, she went on to Massey Business College where she learned the skills that led her to employment as a secretary. As her brothers and dear friends went off to war, she worked to help with expenses at home and waited with her family for their safe return. After WWII, Issa took a Civil Service Job at War Assets, where she met an engaging young man from Russellville, Al, George Scott, Jr. They married in 1947 and began their lives together at the Chateau Avalon off of Highland Avenue. George started his own machine tool business with his partner Truman Thomas, Thomas & Scott Supply Co., and Issa began to prepare for the most important job of her life, being a mother to two daughters, Susan and Sally and her stepson, George Scott, III, “Jeebie”. She was a constant source of support to George, helping him with a move to the Five Pts West area when he formed Scott Supply Co. on Lomb Ave.

Issa was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ensley. As a youth, she was very active in Episcopal Young Churchmen. Issa sang in the choir, held leadership positions in the Episcopal Church Women, and served on the vestry. She led the children’s choir, taught Vacation Bible School, and chaired St. John’s popular fall bazaar and turkey dinners. When St. John’s closed in early 2000’s, Issa continued to participate at her new church home, Ascension Episcopal, Vestavia. She served as volunteer receptionist at Episcopal Place, and as an office volunteer at Carpenter House.

Community and citizenship were important to Issa. As her children grew, she volunteered as a room mother, a PTA officer, and a Girl Scout leader. One of the most important associations of her life was membership in the Alabama Federated Panorama Women’s Club. She held every office in the club and was a valued participant for over fifty years. The work they did with the Blind School in Talladega and other community projects fulfilled her longing to make a positive difference in the world.

After the death of George in 1985, Issa moved to Vestavia Hills and began new associations with her beloved neighbors and her Water Aerobics classes at Lakeshore Rehab. She remained in her own home in Vestavia well into her nineties, when she moved to the Arbor Apartments at St. Martin’s in the Pines. At St. Martin’s, she was a lively member of the community for over six years, participating in all activities and making wonderful new friends.

Issa was predeceased by her husband George, her parents, and her three brothers, Samuel Martin Inman, III, Thomas Erskine (Skeet) Inman, and Russell Lee (Sug) Inman, and her sisters-in-law Marion Jordan Inman and Billie Lou Estes Inman. She was also predeceased by her stepson George Ernest Scott, III (Jeebie), her grandson Jeffrey Madison Scott, and her granddaughter Peggy Michelle Scott.

She is survived by daughters Susan Scott Wilborn (Barney), Sally Scott Allbritton (Rick), daughter-in-law Peggy Jones Scott, grandchildren George Ernest Scott, IV (Judy), James Michael Scott (LeighAnn), Casey Marie White, Jacob Scott Allbritton (Mandy), John David Allbritton (Abby), Justin Lynn Allbritton (Krystal), and Julie Florence Chrisman (Kyle), twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law Nancy Gibson Inman, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Ascension Episcopal Church, Vestavia Hills, Al or to the Alabama Federated Women’s Club Scholarship Program.

A visitation for Florence will be held Friday, March 17, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 1912 Canyon Rd., Vestavia Hills, AL 35216, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
