Doris was born on Aug. 19, 1939 in Birmingham, AL. She attended Jones Valley High School and graduated from Samford University. Doris wore many hats throughout her career, including clerking at the law school, teaching, working in church offices, but her proudest career accomplishment was working for Jefferson County where she served as a Juvenile Court Magistrate, helping thousands of children. She was a life-long Christian and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. After her retirement from Family Court, Doris enjoyed traveling the country, visiting her grandchildren, crocheting blankets for under-privileged mothers so that “all little babies will be warm,” working crossword puzzles, visiting with family and friends and watching classic movies, the occasional “Forensic Files” and The Hallmark Channel. She loved going out to dinner and enjoying life.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Richard Levi Morgan Sr., her father William Henry Harris and mother Gertrude Clark Harris.
Survivors include her three loving sons: Billy Wayne Strickland (Donna), Richard Levi Morgan Jr. (Erin) and Randall Gibson Morgan (Kim), six grandchildren: Aubrey, Levi, Evie, Gibson, Joseph and Ada – with a grandson on the way. Also surviving are two nieces: Sherry McCostlin and Pattie Storey and two nephews: Rusty Merrell and Robert (Bob) Toner.
In Doris’ own words: “I want to be remembered most of all for my love of life and zest for living, enjoying family, friends and associates I was so fortunate to have. Out of this great love and appreciation for life, I wanted those around me to believe in and worship the Creator who made all this possible – to serve Him to the best of our natural, human abilities. There is nothing I can say to make life easier for anyone. What I would say to all those who were part of my life is to live your life to the fullest. Every moment that you live in stagnation is a moment you can never relive. Play the game of life with whatever cards are dealt to you and make the most of every moment you have.”
Funeral services will be held in Ridout’s Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Highway in Birmingham on Friday, July 8 at 11 a.m. Doris will be laid to rest immediately following at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.
