Anthony "Tony" Joseph Antonio of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on May 26, 2022. Tony was born on November 22,1940 in Birmingham. He was 81 years old. He is preceded in death by his father Ross Samuel Antonio, and his mother Mary Ann Virgone Antonio. He is also preceded in death by his loving and long time soul mate, Robert E. Smith.
He is survived by his brother, Norman Ross Antonio Sr.( Judy), and nephew Norman Ross Antonio Jr.(Heather), and several cousins.
Tony was an accomplished musician and gifted artist who played the accordion and piano. He played the accordion at Carnegie Hall. He was a master accordionist winning third place in the world during a worldwide competition. He graduated from Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, received his Master's Degree at the University Of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, with a Master's Degree of Fine Arts at the University of Georgia .
He was a sculptor, painter, and had numerous exhibits of his work across the SouthEast. He taught Art and Art History at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Self Nursing and Rehabilitation along with Southern Care New Beacon in Hueytown, Alabama. The administrator and nursing teams provided excellent and personal care for Tony for the entire time that he lived there.
There will be a Visitation on Friday, June 3rd at Elmwood Chapel at 800 Dennison Ave. Birmingham, Alabama 35211 at 10:00AM. Following Visitation, there will be a Graveside Service at Elmwood Cemetery located on 600 Martin Luther King Blvd. Birmingham, Alabama 35211 at 11:00AM at Block 29.
