Evelyn Marie Turner

Evelyn Marie Means Turner, 101, Belton, MO passed away January 19, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. Services on Friday, January 26 at McGilley & George Funeral Home, 611 Chestnut St, Belton, MO. Visitation 10:00-11:30 am; funeral service 11:30 am. Burial in the Belton Cemetery.

Evelyn was born August 15, 1916 in LaHarpe, KS, to Wilfred H. and Ethel Alice Means. She was lovingly raised by “Aunt” Dot and “Uncle” Bud Callaway of Peculiar, MO. Evelyn graduated as valedictorian from Peculiar High School in 1934. She trained on Burroughs business machines and worked at various companies before going to work for the Federal government. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Arthur R. Turner, in 1946. Together they had two children, Larry Richard and Alice Arlene. The family moved to Belton in 1954, building the home that Evelyn would live in for 49 years. Evelyn worked 22 years (1959-1981) at the Citizen’s Bank of Belton (later Bank of America). She then worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for an additional 15 years, retiring when she was 80. She moved to Carnegie Village in Belton in 2003 and enjoyed her independent-living apartment and the new friends she made in the community. Evelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a remarkable woman, strong and fiercely independent to the very end, and a role model and inspiration to many. She epitomized the phrase “Age is just a number”. Evelyn was devoted to her family and friends, loved dogs, and was an avid sports fan.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, brother Harold Means, and great granddaughter, Liberty Lee Turner. She is survived by her son, Larry (Cindy) Turner, Liberty, MO; daughter, Arlene (Ron Melton) Millard, Leawood, KS; 5 grandchildren, Leza (John) Super, Brett (Kelly) Turner, Mark (Talicia) Millard, Matt (Laura) Millard, and Alissa (soon to be Mrs. Brian Anderson), and 10 great grandchildren Aspen, Cheyenne, Savannah, Augusta, Bransyn and Brystol Turner; Tate, June and Mabel Millard; and Sophia Super. We will miss her terribly, but were so blessed to have had her in our lives for so long.
