Born in Columbus, Ohio on July 19, 1952 to James and Martha (Knox) Knochenhauer, she married Allan Fung on August 31, 1974 in San Mateo, California. Peggy graduated from Hillsdale High School, Chico State (1974), and Notre Dame de Namur University (1975). Upon earning her teaching credential, she taught at St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame. She later worked in the private sector at Computerland, Alumax, and Varilux, and eventually returned to teaching in 1992 for the San Mateo/Foster City School District. She said returning to the classroom was one of the best decisions of her life.
Peggy was a very devoted mother. She was president of the PTA, involved in Girl Scouts, and several after-school activities. Being an avid seamstress, she loved sewing and made many costumes for the local theatre productions. Peggy was a tremendous athlete and for the last three decades swam for the San Mateo Masters. Her love of the water led her to play with the World Champion Peninsula Water Polo team (the Classics) where she made life-long friends. She loved spending time at the family’s cabin in Lake Tahoe — skiing in the winter, swimming, hiking and kayaking in the summer. On a typical night you’d find Peggy alone with a book. She loved reading and learning new things, listening to NPR and various podcasts. She loved organizing the details for her many vacation travels. Because of Peggy, her family had very memorable trips! Peggy was vivacious, always positive, and cheerful. It brought her joy to help others, she always had a smile and made others smile.
Peggy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years, Allan, and their children Joey Fung (wife Chloe Fung), Katie Fung (husband Michael Baker), and Scott Fung (wife Mary Scott). She will also be fondly remembered by her grandson Nolan Fung, her mother Martha Knochenhauer, her seven siblings Dave Knochenhauer (wife Maggi Knochenhauer), Tom Knochenhauer (wife Luz Knochenhauer), Rick Knochenhauer (wife Patti Knochenhauer), Jay Knochenhauer (wife Machelle Knochenhauer), Fritz Knochenhauer, Katie Weinberg (husband Mike Weinberg), Laura Cence (husband Dave Cence) and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, James Knochenhauer.
A celebration of life will be held at the Foster City Recreation Center (650 Shell Boulevard, Foster City) on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 3:30 pm.
Peggy would want to give a very special thanks to the Oncology and Hospice Departments at the Redwood City Kaiser Hospital for their wonderful support and treatment during her years battling cancer.
She loves flowers, but also would like donations made to the American Cancer Society.
