Margaret Stern

She was born and raised in Memphis, TN and graduated from the Central Institute for the Deaf at Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in speech & hearing therapy. After her marriage to David Stern, she lived in Seattle, where she raised daughters Debbie and Ruth, established and operated a bookstore, The Seattle Private Library, and later became a family counselor.

Margaret is survived by David Stern, her husband of 49 years, daughters Debbie Stern and Ruth Stern, granddaughter Izzy Thu Thi Stern, brothers Floyd Herzog, Eddie Aronwald (Rhonda), sister Sue Ellen Katz (Treuman), brother-in-law Edward Stern (Pauline), and soul sisters Susan Powell and Linda Cohan.

Our lovely girl left us on a warm Saturday afternoon, exactly one month past her seventy-first birthday. She'd made it clear she'd had quite enough of doctors, hospitals and even the gentle care of hospice. We suspect she wanted to go shopping, and whilst our attention was briefly averted, she quietly slipped away.

Margaret was a daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother; roles she adored. And yet, she was an entity unto herself, an exquisite creature with an innate sense of color and the artful flair to put things, clothes and people together.

We'll miss her color, her laughter, her effortless and inimitable style. We are fortunate however, that we don't have to miss her love - it's wrapped around us like a blanket; unconditional and ever-present.

The family of Margaret Stern wants you to know that she died peacefully Saturday, October 9, at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, where she has lived the past 14 years.

Margaret fought a long and courageous battle against a myriad of medical conditions complicated by Parkinson’s disease and five surgeries since March of 2008.

She will be buried Sunday, October 24, at 11:00 am, at Sunset Memorial Park, 1215 145th Place, Bellevue, WA 98007, followed by a Celebration of Margaret’s Life at The Bellevue Club: 11200 SE 6th Street, Bellevue, 98004, at 1:00 pm.
