Joe was born in Seattle on March 29, 1932, on his father’s birthday, to Alfred and Anne Menard, and was the first of four children. He died from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease on July 2 , 2022, in Bellevue, with his daughter and his caregiver at his side. He was a graduate of Bothell High School, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and his Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, both from the University of Washington. He married his high school sweetheart, Joy Giehm, in 1952 and they had two daughters. They raised their family in Bellevue. He joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves after he was on active duty and then was recalled to active duty during the Vietnam War and the Pueblo incident. He was the aircraft commander for the C-141B aircraft. He flew all over the world but mostly to the Far East. Joe worked for The Boeing Company for 50 years in aeronautical engineering and marketing.
Following the death of his wife, he was remarried in his later years to Grace St. Sure. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joy, of 33 years, daughter Camille Martlin, grandsons, James Miller, Joseph Miller and Max Martlin, and his beloved wife of 21 years, Grace St. Sure.
He is survived by his daughter Babette Kratz (Robert) of Bellevue, sisters Virginia Mack (Richard) of Lynnwood and Diane Covington-Blair (Ike) of Mountlake Terrace, brother Lt. Col. Ret. Thomas Menard (Terry) of Colorado Springs, CO, grandson Andrew Miller of Seattle, granddaughters Alea Michaelini (Justin) of Everett and Alissa Miller of Redmond, great-granddaughters Journey Michaelini and Kyra Kline, along with many members of his extended family.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 31st, at 1:30 pm at Sunset Hills Funeral Home in Bellevue.
His family suggests rememberances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
