Dear Winnie's Family:

This is such heartbreaking news. Winnie and I were pregnant together with our first children. She was so excited and I was so nervous. And when our children were born, she remained excited and energetic and I was always tired. As the kids got older, we talked about having them meet, but we never got around to it.  We had lunches talking about being immigrant mothers and professional women, and what that meant for our futures.

I will always remember her enthusiasm, commitment, and joy for her kids, her work, and her life. When we left campus due to COVID, I left with the understanding that we would be back for talks, meals, and laughs. It's hard to believe that we won't be doing that. 

My condolences for your loss; Winnie and your family will always be in my thoughts and my heart. 

My deepest condolences to Winnie's family, friends, colleagues, and all who cherished her. I knew Winnie when I was a graduate student in UW's Department of Communication. She was professional, hard-working, and responsible, and above all else I will always remember Winnie's great kindness and warmth. I am so sorry for her loss.

I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest condolences  to Winnie's family. Please know that we have you and Winnie in our thoughts. 

I worked with Winnie when I was in the Communication Department--like many have mentioned, the mailroom is where we would often connect--to talk about food, kids, weekend plans--it was always such a joy to catch up with Winnie. Although I haven't seen her in a long time, I remember her fondly. 

May she rest in peace. 

Dear family and friends of Winnie,

I had the honor of working with Winnie for about 8 years. She and I always loved our chats in the mailroom when warming up our lunches and hearing about what we did the previous weekend or what kinds of clothes we liked - whether it was something we bought or complimenting each other on what we were wearing. Winnie was a ray of light in our department and her smile always warmed my heart. 

Though my heart is now saddened to hear about her passing, her memory and her smile will live on. She will be truly missed.

Winnie was a joy to work with. Many times, I poked my head into her office with some question or another. She was always so generous with her time and gracious with her help. She was also funny. I remember plenty of times when she cracked wise about an issue we were addressing. My condolences to her family. She will be missed. 

I had the joy of working with Winnie for over a decade. Winnie was the absolute light of the Communication Department. Her smile - and ready laugh - were infectious. Whenever I saw Winnie we would chat about her kids, and she always, always remembered whatever story or stage my kids were in. One particularly thoughtful thing that she did was bring my kids candy from China during one trip back home! That was the kind of thoughtful person that she was. My children still remember that candy, and that sweetness was Winnie. 

I offer my deepest sympathies to Winnie’s family and close friends. I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Winnie at the University of Washington.

She made our department a better place in terms of the quality of her work, but even more so in terms of her quality as a person. She was compassionate, kind, and funny. I will miss her warm smile that always extended to her eyes. I will always remember her fondly.

I worked with Winnie at UW. I wish to extend my condolences to her family and to all those whose lives she touched. When my kids were young, Winnie always asked about them, showing so much interest in the challenges and joys of motherhood. When she then became a mother herself, we shared that special knowledge. My heart breaks to know that her journey down that path was cut so short.

I am so sorry for your loss and holding you all in the light.

Like so many, I had the pleasure of working with Winnie at the University of Washington, and she was treasured colleague with a full-bodied laugh, exacting attention to detail, and kindness that never flagged. Winnie's work was tremendous--she helped so many of us navigate UW systems and protocols that had a profound impact on our work and our service to students. Her contributions are incalculable. 

It seems fitting that we so often met in the mailroom near the microwave where Winnie was likely warming up some delicious lunch or afternoon snack. Food was something we both loved to discuss. When my mouth watered at her delectables, she floated the idea of doing a dim sum meal at a restaurant in the International District run by members of her extended family--an offer that I immediately and enthusiastically supported!

And this was Winnie in a nutshell: generous, community-oriented, playful, and offering food as an expression of care and friendship. 

Time with Winnie made any day better, and I am grateful to have known her. She is missed dearly.

I had the good fortune -- and great joy -- of working with Winnie at the University of Washington for many years. I always looked forward to seeing her. I would make a special effort to pop into her office whenever possible to say hello. No matter how busy she was, she would stop to chat and laugh.

I would like Winnie's family and friends to know that she made a difference in the work we did on behalf of our students, and consequently, for the professional world of communications. In Winnie, we had an ally. She always gave us a sense of the possible as we deployed resources to support our program and students' futures.

Most importantly, she made a point of my meeting her two fabulous children. I have such fond memories as she proudly observed the three of us "hang out" in the office. We would recollect that positive experience for weeks afterwards.

Finally, I'll always remember the lunch outing Winnie organized for a few of us to her favorite dim sum restaurant in the International District. It was lovely to experience what mattered to her outside of the work environment. As was her personality, Winnie shared  her world with enthusiasm, warmth and generosity.

Dear family and friends of Huan Yi,
My heart aches for and with all of you. I worked with your beloved wife, mother, daughter, and friend at UW-- and I want you to know she was a beloved colleague too. She did her job extraordinarily well, which made others' jobs easier in many ways. Her eyes and voice were often full of merriment, especially when she talked about her children and family-- she took such delight in you and it showed on her face and in her voice every time she talked about you.  She often asked me about my child, and we enjoyed chuckling together over our children's antics. She was super smart and resourceful, very caring, and a person of stellar integrity. It was a privilege and joy to know her. I have already been missing her these last ~18 months, and I miss her even more now.

My heartfelt condolences to Winnie's family and friends. I feel deeply grateful to have spent time with Winnie as her front office colleague at the University of Washington. I remember her as a warm and generous person.  We shared a lot of experiences - some challenging, some joyous, and many of them fun. I can still hear her rich and welcoming laugh!  I often liked to hold back and walk to department functions with Winnie because she entered a room and changed the atmosphere with her quiet, welcoming presence. And I loved hearing about her beloved children; she was quite stealth in choosing when to announce her maternity leave, she fooled all of us.  I will always remember Winnie and I cherish my work friendship with her. 

I was fortunate to work with Winnie for approximately 7 years at UW. Winne was such a wonderful colleague to work with! I am fortunate to have been able to spend that time working with her.  I will never forget the fond memories we were able to share in the previous years. My condolences to her family and friends.  

I worked with Winnie at UW. I remember how excited she looked, years ago, when she told me one day that she was pregnant. She clearly loved being a mother. She was a wonderful person to work with, and I will miss seeing her around the Department. My condolences to her family.
