A memorial service for Sharon will be held Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet St., Houston, TX 77401. A reception following will occur at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home.
One of Sharon’s proudest accomplishments was graduating from St. Agnes Academy in 1961 as a Fannin Street Girl. Sharon remained active with her Fannin Street Group by attending monthly luncheons and annual reunions.
In 1966 she earned a Bachelor of Science, Nursing from Sacred Heart Dominican College in Houston, TX. She gained a Master of Science, Nursing in 1976 from the University of Arizona as well as the Arizona Nursing Specialist Degree in Pediatric Pulmonary Nursing. In 1978 she earned a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from University of Colorado.
She earned certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pediatrics/Advanced Practice Nurse in 1986, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse in 1992, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 1993.
Ms. Axton’s work experience began in 1966 as a Staff Nurse, Adult ICU, St. Joseph Hospital, Houston. From 1966 through 1974 she worked as a Staff Nurse in the ER and Pediatrics departments of Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. She later worked in other hospitals as a Staff Nurse. In 1976 Sharon began to teach nursing, working as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor at various universities, including University of Colorado, Texas Tech University, University of Texas at Austin, Houston Baptist University, and Texas Women's University.
Sharon authored many professional publications and co-authored university textbooks. One book was translated into Spanish and Chinese. She loved her family, friends and pets. Sharon enjoyed dancing, snow skiing and ice skating. She was very generous to others and a joy to all who knew her.
Sharon is preceded in death by her mother Mary Alice Tamborello Johnson, her father Rex Roland Ennis, sister, Virginia Lee Ennis, stepson Kevin Axton and numerous aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her brother and wife, Gary Lynn and Yvonne Johnson; nephew and wife, Chad Salvata and Bonnie Cullum of Austin, TX; niece, Jacquelyn Ann Condon Cohn of Bayou Vista, TX and her 4 children; niece and husband, Melissa Kay and Robbi Coulter of Staunton, Virginia and one son; niece and husband, Megan Denise and Nick Shifflett of De Cordova, TX and their 3 children; nephew, Daniel Cody Johnson of Denton, TX.; stepson Christopher Kipp Axton of San Antonio, TX and his 2 children; stepson and wife, Stephen Cory and Jill Axton of Lubbock, TX and their two children; and numerous cousins.
