John Franklin Monday, III

In his childhood the family’s primary residence was on Mimosa Street in Bellaire, Texas. However, they lived all over the world following his father’s work as an engineer. The Mondays lived in Germany, South Africa and Iran. John talked often of his teenage years in South Africa. John returned to the U.S. and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1969. He travelled around the world, literally, after graduation. So began a lifelong love of new places, people and sights.

John returned from his travels to Houston and attended the University of Houston. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and the U of H Ski Club. He graduated in 1973 with a BBA in Finance and Economics from the Baugher College of Business.

John began his career working for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in Austin and then for many years in marketing and finance positions in and around Houston. He had his own graphic design business in Sugarland. John ended his working career as the Director of Materials Management for Memorial Hermann, Southwest.

John then retired to enjoy travel and life with Jo, his wife, in Bellaire. He also became “Papi” to his grandsons Jack and Luke who were the light of his life.

John served on the Bellaire City Council for three terms beginning in the year 2000. He remained active in local politics and greatly enjoyed serving the city. He was also a board member and chair of Citizens for a Beautiful Bellaire.

The most important part of John’s life was his family. John married Jo Monday in 1990. They also made their home in Bellaire. They spent more than 33 years traveling the world together and with friends and family. Their favorite destination was Santa Fe, New Mexico, and they also loved fly fishing in Montana. He would never miss a museum, and had great appreciation of art, from Paris to Istanbul. He loved to plan events and host parties. John never met a stranger, and was a master of conversation. He could engage with anyone and make them feel at home.

John is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jo Whyman Monday of Bellaire, Texas, stepsons Hardy Thorson of Houston, and Brandt Thorson and grandsons Jack Thorson and Luke Thorson of Longview, Texas. John is also survived by his Sister Pamela Monday of Austin, and nephews Bill Bundrock, wife Stephanie and children of Midlotian, Texas, and Jeff Bundrock of Austin Texas. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tone Monday of Austin, Texas.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends.
