Cynthia Lea Edmonds died on May 21, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Cynthia was born on January 25, 1963, in Austin, Texas, to Mary C. Van Riel Edmonds and Melvin T. Edmonds, Jr.
She attended Saint Agnes Academy in Houston and graduated in 1981. Cynthia also attended the University of Saint Thomas in Houston and earned two degrees, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1985 and a Master of Liberal Arts degree in 2004.
Cynthia worked at the University of Texas Health Science center in Houston for 31 years as Director of the Institutional Review Board. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alexander Hodge Chapter, Fort Bend County.
Cynthia was both talented and prolific at needlework and knitting, and she regularly donated the blankets and scarves she made to veterans’ groups and homeless shelters. She was an accomplished birder and spent most of her vacation time birding along the Gulf coast and in the desert southwest with her husband, Dennis Fitzgerald. Cynthia was an avid reader and liked both fiction and nonfiction, and she loved attending the Houston Symphony Pops. Cynthia preferred at home recreation to socializing; she enjoyed crossword puzzles, Sudoku and Bananagrams, and she liked to relax watching British shows on PBS.
Cynthia was preceded in death by her father, Melvin T. Edmonds, Jr. She is survived by her husband Dennis Fitzgerald, her mother Mary C. Little, and her brother Michael S. Edmonds.
A memorial service for Cynthia will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Chapel of St. Basil, 3800 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77006. Following the memorial service will be a reception at 4:00 PM at Link Lee Mansion, 3900 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77006.
