On January 3, 2023, David Wesley Smith, passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer; beloved husband of Terri Smith; devoted father of Capt. Alex R. Rives, U.S. Army and wife Lisa, Devin N. Rives and Danielle M. Rives; dear brother of Bruce C. Smith and wife Therese, and Thomas A. Smith and wife Shelly; loving son of the late Rev. Walter C. and Peggy Smith; son-in-law of Mary E. Travers. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at St. George Episcopal Church, 2434 Cape Horn Rd., Hampstead MD 21074. Interment Hampstead Cemetery. On-line condolences may be left for the family @ www.schimunekfuneralhomes.com

Dave was born on March 12, 1960 and was the second son of the late Rev. Walter C. and Peggy T. Smith. He lived in La Plata, MD with his parents, older brother Bruce C. Smith, and younger brother Thomas A. Smith.
In 1966, the family moved to Rockville, MD where Dave attended West Rockville Elementary and Julius West Junior High School. Dave was active in the Rockville United Methodist Church and youth recreational sports, and enjoyed summer camping trips around the country with his family.
In 1976, Dave’s family moved to Towson, MD where Dave graduated from Loch Raven High School in the class of 1978. While in Towson, Dave was active with the Towson United Methodist Church youth groups and volunteered with the Camp Hope summer work project to rebuild and repair underprivileged families’ homes in western Maryland.
In 1982, Dave graduated from High Point College in North Carolina with a degree in Religious Studies. While in North Carolina, Dave enjoyed working at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly during the summer months and owning and working on classic muscle cars from the 60s and 70s.
In 1997, Dave met Terri and her three young children Alex, Devin and Danielle; they quickly became the love of his life. He and Terri married May 1, 1999 and Dave became a devoted husband and loving stepfather.
Dave was a computer analyst for DAP Global Inc. located in Baltimore, MD for 24 years. He loved watching the Baltimore Ravens and was a season ticket holder. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and other motor sports on TV. He also relished eating, especially Maryland blue crabs. His true passions in life were his family and his faith. He loved spending time with his wife and raising their three children.
Dave, Terri, and Devin moved to Manchester, MD in 2012. He remained active in his church communities at Trinity Episcopal Church in Elkridge, and later Saint George’s Episcopal Church in Manchester.
In 2012, Dave survived a bout with thyroid cancer and was cancer-free until 2017 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. After five years of surgeries and cancer treatments, he passed on January 3, 2023. He was 62 years old.
