Allen L. Baker, 92, of Indianapolis, went home to be with Jesus in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 6, 2024. For those who knew him, it will come as no surprise that he passed in the comfort of his home, in his favorite recliner, with the love of his life, Irene, holding his hand.
Allen was born on July 18, 1932, in Indianapolis. He was the son of the late Johnie and Bertha (Geisendorff) Baker. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Irene; his daughter Pam (Ted) Ebeyer, his son Mark (Joyce) Baker; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and stepdaughters Paula (Kevin Curson) McConnell and Pamela Zagar. In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his grandson Dustin Boyer, his great granddaughter Avalyn Joy Ebeyer, and his stepson Richard Isom.
Allen graduated from Southport High School in 1952 after which he joined the United States Navy where he proudly served as a Gunner’s Mate on the USS Midway during active duty from 1953 - 1956. He was employed at Indianapolis Power & Light for 32 years (1958 - 1990) in the Steam Heat Department. During the mid-to-late 60s, Allen helped with the construction of the Indiana Central Little League baseball fields, and coached baseball for five years. He also served on the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years.
Together, Allen and Irene enjoyed square dancing for more than 20 years, serving as officers in their Square Dance Club, serving as officers in the Southside Computer Club, and supporting the Recording Ministry and the Lamplighter’s Newsletter publication for Emmanuel Baptist Church for 20 years.
Services for Allen will be held at Little & Sons Funeral Home: 1301 Main Street, Beech Grove, Indiana 46107 on Friday, October 11. A Public Visitation will be from 11:30am - 1:00pm with the Funeral Service to follow at 1:00pm. Allen will immediately be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery: 700 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, with a full Military Honors ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you celebrate Allen’s memory by sharing a meal with someone special and savoring every bite. Know, too, that Allen will be smiling down from Heaven if you eat in his honor a coney, a tenderloin, some really good fried chicken, or peanut butter fudge.
Lastly, Allen’s family would like to thank the amazing Franciscan Hospice Care team for their comprehensive and compassionate care of Allen and his family for the last 7+ months. Lengthy hospice care service is not common, so we had the rare opportunity to witness the extent of this extraordinary ministry and were blessed beyond measure to be so well cared for.
