Stephen Brent Helvey, passed away on December 8, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on April 10, 1943, in Lillybrook, West Virginia, he was the son of the late John Franklin Helvey and Claetta Lytton Helvey.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Rosa Maria Madla Rodriguez of Sabinas, Mexico. He is also survived by his children: son John Helvey (Valerie) of Fort Mill, SC; three daughters Stephenie Tocado (Richard) of Charlotte, NC; Valerie Waddell (Brandon) of Shady Spring, WV; and Amanda Travers of Beckley, WV. And three stepsons, Ricardo Zamorano Madla, Emmanuel Zamorano Madla (Cecilia Diaz-Coulder Garcia), and Carlos Zamorano Madla (Marily Beltran).
He was the cherished brother of the late Jerry F. Helvey (Evelyn) of Deale, MD; and the late Rita Matherly of Shady Spring. He is also survived by his brothers, Russell Grant Helvey Sr. (Erma) of Ocean Pines, MD; Nevin Andre Helvey (Bonnie) of Olney, MD; and sisters Linda Joe Murphy (Larry) of Sophia, WV, and Myra Sue Severt (Jim) of Church Road, VA.
He was loved by his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pawpaw” or “Opa,” as well as by his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Stephen Brent graduated from Stoco High School in 1961 and shortly thereafter moved to Washington, DC. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1969. After his service, he returned to West Virginia to work as a master electrician for Westmoreland Coal Company and Maben Energy. He later founded and operated his own business, Shelco Inc. In the early 2000s, Brent embarked on a new chapter in life, moving to Sabinas, Mexico
He loved hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, horseback riding and spending time with his family. He was loved for his kind heart, sharp wit and the joy he brought to those around. Even in his final days, his quick wit and humor brought smiles to his family.
A celebration of his life will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C Byrd Dr. Beckley WV 25801 on Saturday December 14,2024 from 2pm to 6pm.
