Rebecca (Becki or Sallie) Ellen Moody, 69, of Flat Top, West Virginia passed away with her daughter by her side at Meadow Garden Medical Center on Friday, November 30, 2018 due to medical complications following several untreated strokes during her stay at the Federal Medical Center of Lexington, Kentucky.
She was born on June 29, 1949 to the late Cordie Faye Nugen and is preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Shane Moody; and brother, Raymond Nugen. She is survived by her husband, Charles Moody; daughter Barbara Moody-Wood; son, Charles Moody; niece, Rachel Nugen; grandchildren, Amber Woody, Cole Moody, Sarah Wood; her loving brothers, Richard and Robert Nugen; and many other loving and not-so loving relatives.
For those who had the pleasure of knowing “Old Sallie”, there is no argument that she embodied the type of character you might find in a 1960’s folk song – a free spirit, boundless creative dressed in African dashiki, Birkenstocks, accessorizing with clove cigarettes, big hair, a rosary, and a contagious laugh. She was in every aspect of this life, charmingly eccentric. In the darkest of moments, her humor shone light. In moments of shock, her wit was unmatched. She was quick-thinking, she thrived in chaos, could read a room like no other, and had a deep vocation to help others in need.
She was a mother figure to her own children, her grandchildren, many children whom she taught in school, and even more than a few strays. She was always an intense thinker, a lover of different cultures, and infinitely creative. With an extraordinary openness to this world and all people with whom she met, she greeted everyone with profound kindness and humanity. She was a talented painter and could create a magnificent piece of art in a matter of minutes, sometimes with nothing more than an eyeshadow brush. She was a prominent Bejeweled and Mahjong master and a constant chewer of Extra peppermint gum. She had a flair for drama and a talent for performance, especially when she slipped into character of “old Sallie Holstein”, her mischievous alter ego who has surely touch the lives of many. It might be difficult to find a better pianist, and it is surely impossible to find another character like her in this world.
The family will greet friends, family and all who want to celebrate the life of our dear “Old Sallie” on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with the Reverend W. Donald Wise officiating. Burial will follow the service in Okes Family Cemetery in Flat Top, WV.
