Mr. Wheeler was preceded in death by his wife Karen Ward Wheeler, His Mother and Father, Edith Christine Wheeler /Turner/Shumate, and Charles Andrew Wheeler. Two Stepfathers Edwin R. (Red)
Turner, and Cambell W. Shumate. And a Half Brother Robert A. Turner.
Survivors include Sons Richard Wheeler, William (Shawn) Wheeler, and Wife Stephanie of Lake Wylie, SC. One Granddaughter Isabella Grace Wheeler., one stepbrother, Curtis Shumate of Hurricane WV. And two stepsisters, Martha Faulconer of Hinton WV. And Dorthy Meise of Baltimore Md. Numerous Cousins Nieces and Nephews.
Mr. Wheeler worked for Verizon Communications, Formerly C & P Telephone, / Bell Atlantic for 43 years as a Lineman, Central office Repairman, and spent his last 35 years with the telephone company in Management positions for the Network Operations Group. When living in Hinton Mr. Wheeler was volunteer fire fighter with the Hinton Fire Department. Mr. Wheeler was active in helping Law enforcement Via Telephone Company Security, and Federal Bureau of Investigation, joint operations.
He received commendations from the White House Communications Agency for his role in helping to establish communications for Presidential Visits.
Mr. Wheeler has served several civic organizations during his life, as a past member of the Hinton Lions club, Past President of the Shady Spring Jaycees. He was a past treasurer of the Shady Spring band boosters, and a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Currently Mr. Wheeler was a member of the Beckley Kiwanis Club, and a former Beckley Kiwanis club president, serving in 1994 /1995. He also served various terms on the Board of Directors, of the Club.
Mr. Wheeler received a volunteer action award from President Ronald Reagan in relation to various civic or charitable activities he was involved in through C & P Telephone.
Mr. Wheeler was a member of the US Army, and later the Army National Guard, 1965 through 1972.
Most of Mr. Wheeler's life was dedicated to his family, and civic work, or after retirement spent a period helping His brother Robert with various construction projects.
John was one who Loved his Lord, loved to hear people laugh, and see children warm, safe, learning, and enjoying life.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Tuesday October 15, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Kellie Laraba officiating. Burial will follow at Tilden Cemetery in Glen Morgan. Friends may call from 6-8 on Monday October 14, at the funeral home. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
