Lilah was born in Rockland, Texas on August 26, 1925 to Mertie Inez Pope and Henry Jackson Worthey.
She graduated from Colmesneil High School in 1942 and moved to Beaumont to attend Chenier Business College. Before World War II, she gained employment with the United States Navy Department as a clerical worker in Washington, D.C.
Lilah moved back to Beaumont after the war and felt that she had a call to be a missionary and worked in Alaska for a short period of time.
She moved back to Beaumont and went to work for Beck & Beck Law Firm where she was employed as a legal secretary. While working for the law firm, she took on the responsibility of keeping the books for the United Gospel Tabernacles. She continued to feel a calling in her life and eventually left Beck & Beck to become the church secretary for the Sabine Tabernacle. After marrying Jack Baxter in January of 1978, she retired.
Her years of work as a secretary for the church caused her to gain much experience in matters of the church’s history and she was a valuable asset in those matters.
Lilah is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Jack Baxter.
She is survived by a brother, Forrest R. Worthey; sister, Aliece Monk and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 21, 2012, at 2 p.m., at the Sabine Tabernacle, 1065 Hazel Ave., Beaumont, Texas with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
