Sharon Jeane Peebles

September 4, 1943 - April 3, 2024

Sharon Jeane Peebles died in Beaumont, Texas, on April 3, 2024, as she lived -- with love, optimism and appreciation for her blessings. Born September 4, 1943 in Douglas, Arizona, she was the daughter of Robert Phineas Hill and Margilee Ernest Hill who predeceased her. Sharon was as friendly, generous, and joyful a person as she was spirited and determined. Her life manifested the fruits of the spirit of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

An only child, Sharon graduated from Liberty High School before attending Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education while being an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. Later, she earned her Masters in Education with an emphasis in reading from St. Thomas University in Houston, Texas. Following graduation in 1965, Sharon married Richard Peebles, also of Liberty, Texas, moving to Austin for Rick to attend law school. In 1968, Sharon and Rick moved to Baytown, Texas where they started a family and became active members of the community.

Sharon was a gifted Language Arts teacher in Baytown, giving students of every age and grade the gift of language and the joy of reading. Through her teaching career, she established friendships among her fellow teachers, maintaining and enjoying their warm fellowship until the last years of her life. In retirement, Sharon was gratified to work with individuals pursuing citizenship, providing tutoring in preparation for the US Naturalization Test.

Sharon gladly offered her time as a Cub Scout leader, a chaperone for Sterling Stars, and a member of the Service League. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church, she served as a Sunday School teacher and chaperone for choir trips. Serving on the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo provided her the opportunity to travel and gain many new friends. In her retirement, she dove headfirst into her Astros fan phase, keeping statistics of every game she attended, going to Spring training, and making the trek to Cooperstown, New York, for Craig Biggio’s Baseball Hall of Fame induction. Sharon was a loving, warm hostess, who enjoyed sharing her ranch in Bertram, Texas with family and friends.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 58 years, Rick Peebles of Beaumont, Texas; her son, Rob Peebles and wife Anna of Nashville, Tennessee; Amy Peebles Mayo and husband Thomas of Beaumont, Texas; her adored grandchildren, Caroline Mayo and John Thomas Mayo, Griffin Peebles and Burge Peebles. She is also warmly remembered and missed by her extended family across Texas and the country.

Funeral services are planned for Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Cedar Bayou Grace Methodist Church in Baytown, Texas, followed by a graveside service at Peebles Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will occur from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown, Texas.
