Joanne Garner York was born July 19, 1927 in Long Beach California, passed away March 15, 2022. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. Her loving family were the greatest pride and joy of her life.
Joanne graduated from North Side High School in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1944 an honor student and tennis singles champion. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas graduating in 1948 with a B.S. and B.A. in chemistry and a K-12 teaching certificate. She was hired by the DuPont Company as a chemist and worked at the Sabine River Works in Orange, Texas four years. Here she met and married Hansell York in 1951, a civil engineer in the DuPont construction division.
Moving around with DuPont, they came to Baytown in 1967 and Joanne substituted in the Goose Creek schools for four years. Principal Henry Armstrong asked her to teach government. After getting additional hours in Government at the University of Houston, she began teaching government and economics full time at Robert E. Lee High School in 1972. While at Lee, she was Social Studies Chairman for nine years, took students to Washington D.C. in the Close-Up Program, organized and coached the first girl’s golf team, received her Master’s degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University and retired from teaching in l982. She was noted for her school spirit and her Football Previews on Friday during football season. Joanne’s background helped her become one of the district’s outstanding government and economics teachers. Joanne held offices in many professional organizations and attended state and national conventions. She was a life member of the National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association and a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association. A civic minded person, she helped serve many Shrine oyster fries, many OES steak fries, worked on several Habitat for Humanity houses, and worked at the polls in Precinct 028 for 22 years serving from clerk to elected Republican Precinct Chairman. She and her enriched students worked for such political candidates as Jack Fields and Ed Emmett. She was especially proud when one of her former students Brent Perry ran for office and she helped in his campaign.
A 60-year member of the Eastern Star, she and her husband served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of Goose Creek Chapter #798 in 1982.
They served many years on the Board for the Rainbow Girls and she holds the Grand Cross of Colors.
Golf was her favorite sport and she played it for over 50 years. Joanne was a long-time member of Goose Creek Country Club, past President of the Women’s Golf Association, first Senior Club Champion in l995 and she held that title several more times.
Joanne was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church since l967, she served in many capacities from Sunday school teacher to the Administrative Board. She was a long-time member of the Guild Group, Fellowship Class, Mary Tarrant Circle and the United Methodist Women. She went on the Emmaus Walk and received the Cross and Flame award for her involvement in Scouting.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents Virginia and Hamilton Garner, a sister Elizabeth and husband John Ed Douglass, nephews Dr. John Douglass, Dick Douglass and Bill Rudderow, brother-in-law and wife Sidney and Nena York, a niece Susan York Merkle and a loving husband of 49 years Hansell N. York Jr.
She is survived by her three sons and their families. Woody and Myra York and daughter Shannon and David Blanks of Jackson, Mississippi and daughter Mary and Cameron Woodward of Madison, Georgia. Great grandchildren Hampton and Maclure Blanks and Garner and Greer Woodward. Bob and Caroline York, daughter Ann and Justin Anderson and son Robert and Brittany York of Baytown, Texas, and great grandchildren Abigail and Brady Anderson, and Riley and Kason Cox and Parker Garner York. Jim and Annemieke York of Arlington, Texas and grandchildren Dr. Brad and Rachel Boccaccio of Arlington, Texas. Kelsey and Michael Montgomery of Eddy, Texas and Hagen Fritz of Austin, Texas. Great grandchild Oliver James Boccaccio. A sister Nancy Rudderow of Bryan Texas, and many loving nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held April 9, 2022, 3:00pm, at St Mark’s UMC.
Inurnment will be in St. Mark’s United Methodist Church Columbarium.
