Edward Ansley Hurst

Edward Ansley Hurst, 84, of Baytown, TX passed away December 7, 2006 in a Houston hospital. Ed was born in Giddings, TX on November 9, 1922. He lived his early years in Houston where he eventually attended the University of Houston. He later moved to Baytown and lived the remainder of his life here. Ed worked 38 years for ExxonMobil as a cargo inspector, chemical lab technician, and an administrator of the oil movements division at the Exxon Building in downtown Houston. After retiring from ExxonMobil, Ed began consulting with Intercontinental Terminals for 10 years and continued this work until health reasons prevented him from doing so. Ed was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1992 and spent his 70th birthday in the hospital at M.D. Anderson. He survived 14 years after pancreatic cancer and is one of the oldest survivors on record.

Ed was a member of the Reagan Masonic Lodge and Baytown Evening Optimist Club. He served with the Optimists for over 30 years where he was involved in Pee Wee football, summer baseball, and the annual Christmas Tree Lot. He was also named Optimist President in 1986-1987 and honored with Optimist of the Year during his time with the organization. Ed was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he served on many committees and volunteered in ever aspect of church involvement.

One of Ed’s great joys was traveling. He and his wife Dorotha have traveled to every state in the U.S. and every continent in the world except Australia. They took many trips with the Flying Longhorns and many times included their grandchildren.

Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Elizabeth Hurst and brother, Ernest C. Hurst. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorotha Nan Hurst of Baytown; sons and daughters-in-law, Jamie and Cathy Hurst of Kerrville and David and Sherri Hurst of Iowa Colony; daughter and son-in-law, Stefani and Keith Weir of Baytown; sister, Nancy Jane Hurst of Bellaire; sister-in-law, Barbara Hurst of Bellaire; brother-in-law, James Cook of Alvin; grandchildren, Stacy and Neil Robertson, Jennifer and Jeremy Kinder, Brittany Elise and Harrison Hurst Weir; great grandchildren, Ella Grace Robertson and Eliza Dawn Kinder; niece, Susan Hensley; nephew, Trace Cook; great nieces, Kim and Kristi Hensley; and great nephew, Eric Hensley.

Serving as pallbearers will be Rich Merz, Kyle Fanning, Mickey Streitman, John “Pee Wee” Thomas, Bill Watts, and Gene Fischesser. Honorary pallbearers will Hobart Enoch and the Baytown Evening Optimist Club.

His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, December 11, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

His family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Park Plaza Hospital for the wonderful care given Ed and also a special thanks to their physician and friend, Dr. Bob Fayle for his unmatched expertise and kindness. They would also like to thank Bayview Home Health and Mandy Whitaker. Also, his family is grateful for Dolly Green, who cared for Ed during the time that he was homebound. Lastly, their utmost thanks and appreciation go out to Mickey and Maria Streitman who are lifelong friends and always will be a blessing to them.
