Billie was born November 21, 1928, in Houston, Texas, and the family later moved to Cedar Bayou, Texas. She was a lifelong member of Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church, where she attended Sunday school and later became a member of the choir. She was a 1945 graduate of Cedar Bayou High School. She married Johnny Turner and they had two wonderful children, Roxanne and Tommy Turner. Along with raising a family, she spent many years as head bookkeeper for a large construction company in Pasadena, TX.
As years went by, she divorced, and in 1975, she met and married the love of her life, Bob Wright, the father of two daughters, Cindy and Stacy. Billie and Bob accomplished a lot in their 35 years of marriage. They traveled extensively, cruised many times, traveled in Europe, built and operated a grocery store, built a beach house on Bolivar Peninsula, and then finally retired.
Bob's health declined, and in March 2010, they moved to New Braunfels to be close to their daughter, Roxanne, and family. Bob passed away seven months after moving, and Billie remained in New Braunfels. She missed Bob every day after he was gone, but she bravely did the best she could. She filled her days making new friends at the Augusta Garden Condos, where she spent her days gardening, cooking, sewing and painting, and nights cheering for the Spurs. As she says...Life Goes On. She later moved to Gruene Senior Living where she made many friends with residents and staff. They were a loving addition to her family. Even there, she continued cooking and serving her friends. Mammaw, we will miss sitting at your table.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, Bob Wright, of Arkansas, her parents Mr. & Mrs. G. L. Sowell, her brother Lee Denman Sowell and her son, Tommy Turner, all of Baytown.
She is survived by her daughter, Roxanne Ware and husband Richard of New Braunfels, grandchildren Amy-Leigh Rodriguez and husband Candido of New Braunfels, Steven Richard Taylor and wife Dana of Houston, TX, Cindy Wright Greenwood and husband, John of Austin, and Stacy Wright of Austin. Grandchildren Rylee-Kay Mendez, India Taylor Mills, Harris, Nelson and Anna Greenwood. Brother George Curtis Sowell of Florida and his sons Curt and Larry Sowell of Florida. Nephew Denny Shamblin and family of Baytown and Niece Ginger Wardlaw and family of San Angelo.
The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Earthman Baytown Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Cedar Crest Cemetery on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 10:00AM.
