Shannon Marquez McGuire, a New Orleans native and long-time resident of Baton Rouge entered this world on January 27, 1951 and exited on January 12, 2018. Preceded in death by father Abel Marquez and the most loving mother in the world Gloria Theresa Argus, grandparents John Edward Argus and Cecile LeBlanc, brother Stephen R. Marquez, maternal Aunts Audrey Gardner and Betty Moore, maternal cousin Robert J. Gardner, Sr. and grandson Gage W. McGuire.
Shannon is survived by her devoted spouse of thirty eight years Hassan (San) Abousoayd. Shannon was entrusted with one beloved child, her son William P. McGuire and wife, Nicole. Shannon is survived by three granddaughters, Tre’ Carrie McGuire, Devyn McKayla Hilton, and Carrie Elizabeth McGuire, a brother Larry A. Cousin and sister Loretta A. Cousin. Shannon is also survived by an uncle, John E. Argus, Jr. and wife Jeanette, maternal cousins Drena G. Hutchinson, Tommy Gardner and wife Cyndi, Bill Gardner and wife Vicky.
Shannon was blessed with the life-long friendships of Gaye Farris (53 years) and Marsha Wells (44 years).
Shannon earned her Bachelor of Education from University of New Orleans, her Masters in English from Louisiana State University and her Doctorate in English from University of Southwestern Louisiana.
Shannon loved poetry and language maybe even more than she loved the world and its people. A published poet and instructor of many subject matters in English including poetry, reading and writing. Shannon taught at Louisiana State University and other local universities for over thirty years. Her life was much enhanced by the South Louisiana poetry community especially the Back Room Poets. As part of this community Shannon helped organize a popular series of poetry readings and adored reading her own work in every setting from academic meetings to smoky bars.
Margaret Atwood wrote “A Word after a Word after a Word is power.” Shannon’s extensive collection of poetry is her enduring power and her gift to this world and to all those she adored.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Thursday, January 18, 2018 beginning at 9am until funeral service at 11am. A private graveside service will be held at Westlawn Cemetery in New Orleans.
