Myrle Davis Browning, born July 30, 1924, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, one day short of her 100th birthday. She was a native of Grangeville, Louisiana, and a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge. She was a retired employee of the United States Department of Agriculture with over forty years of outstanding service. Her work ethic and intelligence impressed all who knew her. She was an active participant in her church, Church of the Way Presbyterian, and its senior citizens’ group YAWS, as well as the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Lovingly known as GaGa by her family and friends, she was a kind, compassionate, generous, and loving lady, who always put the good of others before her own. She was strong and resilient. Her family was always the prime focus and joy of her life, especially her grandsons of whom she was so very proud.
GaGa is survived by her son James H. Browning and his wife Kathryne; daughter Jo Ellen Browning Samaha and her husband Douglas; two grandsons, James Nak Browning and his wife Katie and Trey Douglas Samaha and his wife Laura; and three great grandsons Eli Davis Browning, Luke James Browning, and Ellis Douglas Samaha III. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband J. Holcombe Browning; her parents Katie and Morris Homer Davis; sisters Nellie Manchester, Bertie Johnson, and Ivy Watson; brothers J. B. and Carl as well as infants Morris Homer, Jr. and Ralph Davis; and her longtime friend A.P. McLachlan.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, August 2, from noon to 2:00 PM with a memorial service to follow at 2:00, officiated by Father Jerry Martin. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to caregivers at Landmark South Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility as well as those of Life Source Hospice. In addition, the family lovingly thanks Myrle’s wonderful neighbors for their friendship and support throughout the years.
