Maurice "Pete" Meliet Sr.

He was born on June 15, 1932.

Those left to cherish his memory included: his brother Rene (Abe) Meliet, three stepsons, Andy & Carolyn Walker, David Walker, Gene & Sandy Walker. Grandchildren are Stephanie Walker David, Brigitte Walker, Mike Walker, Chris Walker & Kelly Barringer, Jimmy & Janelle (Walker) Haynesworth.

Great Grandchildren, Trace David, Alyssa Walker, James & Madilyn Haynesworth. Numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He is proceeded in death by his beloved wife of fifty years, Irene Shaffett Walker Meliet. His son Reece Meliet, His parents Rene & Rose Meliet, His brothers, Jerry, Wallis-(Doodie) & Malcolm (Butsie) Meliet, His Sister Lillie May Meliet Barnes, his grandson Cary Walker.

Pete grew up in a large household in Baton Rouge, he was one of 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Pete was a gifted athlete, he graduated from Istrouma High School where he excelled in all sports but especially football. He earned the honor of MVP in his senior year and received a football scholarship from LSU. Pete served in the USAF from 1951 to 1955.

He met & married the love of his life, Irene Shaffett Walker, a widow with 3 young sons, they were married for 50 years until her death in 2008.

His chosen profession after the military was in the electrical field with 55 years’ service with local union 995 IBEW. He worked most of his career as project manager with Saia Electric.

Pete loved watching all sports on TV, he spent most of his free time fishing, duck hunting, bowling, dancing, camping, traveling the country, going to casinos & spending free time with family and friends. He loved to tinker in his workshop. He and his brothers started the “Meliet” family fishing tournament so that all the Meliet/Walker family could enjoy spending time together.

Pete was a sweet, kind, gentle soul, he had a quick wit, great sense of humor and enjoyed making new friends wherever he went. He always had great advice & was always a calm voice of reason.

Special Thanks to Mike Walker for assisting Pete the last few weeks as his health declined.

Services will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Wednesday March 10th.

Visitation will begin at 10AM, Services in the Chapel will begin at Noon.

Pallbearers to include: Andy Walker, David Walker, Gene Walker, Mike Walker, Chris Walker & Jimmy Haynesworth.

Burial to proceed after services are concluded.
