Martha Helen Conner Byrd died at home April 3, 2014. She was born on October 13, 1917 in Vidalia, LA, and had resided in Baton Rouge since early childhood. She was preceded in death by her parents Margaret and H. B. Conner, Sr., her husband of 56 years H. Warren Byrd, and her three siblings Louise Conner, Ida Mae Byers, and H. B. Conner Jr. Survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law Lynda and Eustice Raines, Jackson, MS, Deranne and Dr. James Boothe, McComb MS, and Jan Byrd Wyly; two sons and two daughters-in-law Warren and Arlene Byrd, Richard and Addie Byrd. Twelve grandchildren and their spouses: Missy and Ed Kelly, New Vernon, NJ, John and Laurie Raines, Jackson, MS, Allison and Tom Drummond, New Orleans, LA, Mimi and Kris Wilson, New Orleans, LA, Lauren and Josh Reed, Matthew and Allison Byrd, New Orleans, LA, Conner and Rachael Byrd, Natchitoches, LA, Taylor and Michelle Byrd, Gonzales, LA, Justin Byrd, Konnor and Danielle Wyly, Claire Wyly, and Jackson Wyly. Thirteen great grandchildren: Caroline and Lauren Kelly, Suzie and John Raines, Willa and Henry Drummond, Conley and Charles Wilson, Liam and Juliana Byrd, Chloe, Gavin, and Lincoln Byrd, and several nieces and nephews. The family also gives a special thank you to Madrea Scott, her trusted caregiver for many years. A member of the first pledge class of Delta Omega Chapter of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, she remained an active member for over 75 years. She was named Outstanding Alumnae of all LSU sororities in 1997 and received the Greek Excellence Award for Delta Delta Delta in 2007. She served on the House Corporation Committee many years and was instrumental in the building of the LSU Tri Delta House. In recognition for her many years of service to the chapter, the Martha Helen Conner Byrd Outstanding Senior Scholarship was established. She has been a member of First United Methodist Church for over 85 years, and was present at age 8 when her father laid the church cornerstone. She held many volunteer positions over the years, including Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, president of Kum Dubl Sunday School class, XYZ work, and helping with distribution of church statements. In 2005 she was the recipient of the FUMC Women's Service Award. Mrs. Byrd worked for many years with the Division of Administration and later with the State Treasurer, an office once held by her late father. Upon her retirement, she volunteered as a Docent at the Old Governor's Mansion for several years. Some of the many organizations she was active in include: Eastern Star, Krewe of Iduna, American Business Women's Association (named Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1970), Delta Delta Delta Alumnae Organization, and Junior Book Guild. She was a member of Psi Psi Psi Sorority, serving as its president, secretary, and historian over the years. She chaired the Tri Psi International Convention in Baton Rouge twice. She was also a member of International Psi Psi Psi, serving as recording secretary several years and attending convention annually until 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the "Martha Helen Conner Byrd Memorial Scholarship" in care of Delta Delta Delta Foundation, 2331 Brookhollow Plaza Drive, Arlington, TX 76006. Checks should be made payable to the Foundation noting the named Scholarship. Visitation at First United Methodist Church 930 North Blvd. from 10am to noon on Saturday April 5th, followed by services at noon in the church sanctuary, and then inurnment at Roselawn Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Arrangements are being made through Rabenhorst Funeral Home at 825 Government St.
