Mamie Louise Magee Burrell was born on September 4, 1951 in Magnolia, Mississippi. She was a member of The Greater New Galilee Baptist under the leadership of the late Dr. Rev. C.N. Burrell, Sr. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She later joined her husband at Little Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Morris Jackson, Sr.
Mamie attended Scotlandville Senior High School and graduated from Glen Oaks High School in 1969. She continued her education at Southern University where she received her Bachelor degree of Science in 1974. While in college, she married her long- time love, Calvin Alf Burrell. They were married for 51 wonderful years. During this time, they were blessed with two beautiful children: Cedric and Ciara Burrell. They were also blessed to rear a bonus child, Destiny Robinson-Johnson, whom they loved with all their hearts. She was employed with the East Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit for several years and later became employed with LSU School of Veterinary Medicine where she remained until her retirement on February 26, 2011.
Mamie was a quiet, loving, humble and giving person. She loved children. She was very passionate and proud of her collection of Lee Middleton and African American Barbie dolls. She also collected and loved her African American figurines created by Thomas Blackshear and Ebony Visions.
On, April 18, 2024, Mamie departed this life at Hospice of Baton Rouge on the Butterfly wing, where she gained her wings to make her journey home to heaven. Mamie will be greatly missed. Her smile will continue to shine forever in our hearts.
Mamie leaves to cherish her loving memory; her husband, Calvin A. Burrell; one son, Cedric (Veronica) Burrell Sr.; one special daughter, Destiny (Davion) Robinson- Johnson; her mother, Willean Evans; a loving and special niece, Lakisha Patrick; two grandchildren: Cedric, Jr and Alaysia Burrell; one special grandchild, Amaya Johnson; four sisters: Linda (Jimmy) Taylor, Willie Jean (Lazarus) Turner, Judy Bell, and Cynthia (Hilliard) Bonner; one brother: Dale (Sylvia) Evans; four sisters-in-law: Carolyn Burrell, Glamorie McCutheon, Brenda Allen, and Thelma Sulcer; three brothers-in-law: Moses Roy (Carolyn) Burrell, Isaac N. Burrell and Square N. Burrell, Jr.; four God-children: Teranda Pope, Merrick Cosey, Myriette Shillingford and Archie Burks Jr; five devoted friends: Patrick Lacy, Edna J. Cosey, Francine Jones, Dottie Evans and Lorita Burrell; three aunts: Carrie Tobias, Ethel Martin, and Gloria Tobias; two uncles: Tommy Tobias and Kenis Tobias; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mamie was preceded in death by her daughter; Ciara Burrell; biological father, Samuel Magee; step-father; Willie Evans; sister, Daffie "Dean" Thomas; special niece, Karla Kornbacher; grandparents, Roy and Hattie Tobias; father and mothers-in law, Square N. Burrell Sr., Theresa Burrell, and Thelma Burrell; and godmother, Louise Thomas.
Religious service Saturday, April 27, 2024, 11:00 AM at the Greater New Galilee Baptist Church, 9185 Wilbur St., Baton Rouge, La. 70807. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until service time. Rev. Dt. Mark A. Litt, Sr. will be officiating the services. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
