A resident and native of Baton Rouge, he died Tuesday, Mar. 19, 2013 at his home. He was 105 and a retired Boilermaker/Welder with Local 582. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Sarah Monachello Messina, his parents Nicholas and Lillie, and 9 brothers and sisters. He is survived in death by 3 children, Lillie Greer, Lawrence N. Messina and Barbara Messina; 7 grandchildren, Blake, Laurie, Mark, Lisa, Randy, Stacey and Ricky; and 12 great-grandchildren, Randy, Cody, Corey, Candace, Ashley, Hollie, Sarah, Brennan, Christopher, Andrew, Anthony and Nicholas. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Frederick Billings and caretaker Jackie Denham for their dedicated care of Lawrence. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd. on Fri., Mar. 22 from 5-9 pm and Sat., Mar 23 at St. George Catholic Church from 10-11 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Fr. Rubin Reynolds. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Lawrence will always be remembered for loving his John Deere lawnmower, tending to his gardens and fresh vegetables, peeling sugar cane for his grandchildren and pulling them in the sled behind his tractor.
