Joel Jarrett Safer was born on March 13, 1940 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and departed this life on October 9, 2024 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nina Jarrett and Michael Safer, Sr., and his brother, Michael Safer, Jr.
Joel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness, faith, passion for life and wonderful sense of humor. His large family was the greatest source of joy and blessing throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Melanie McCain Safer, and his children: Heidi Lane and her husband Joey Lane, JJ Safer and his wife Jodi Safer, Kelli Carpenter and her wife Anne Steele, and Charles Carpenter and his wife Kathleen Carpenter. He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren: Geddy, Indie, and Tippi Lane; Jack and Maggie Safer; Parker, Chelsea, Blake, and Vivi O'Donnell; and Abby and Mack Carpenter. His first wife, Joy Hodges Safer, also survives him. A special thank you to Bettina Adams for always taking such good care of the Safer family.
Joel graduated from University High School and LSU before obtaining his dental degree from the Loyola School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Baton Rouge for over 30 years, specializing in cosmetic dentistry and transforming countless smiles. Joel's career was more than just a profession—he worked until the age of 75 because of his deep love for his patients and the joy it brought him.
Outside of his professional life, Joel loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He also loved traveling, LSU sports, and Broadway Theatre. At 75, he took up painting and created special pieces of art for his family. He was a devoted Christian and active in his faith community. Joel was member of The Chapel on the Campus and later became a member of Christ Covenant Church.
Joel's wish for his children, grandchildren and friends was that they would come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ as reflected in his favorite Bible verse: John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
His life was a testimony to his faith, and his family celebrates his passing with the belief that they will one day be reunited with him in glory.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Christ Covenant Church, 1700 Lee Drive with visitation at 10am with the funeral to follow at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Christ Covenant Church in Joel's memory.
