Jewell Bailey Varnado passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021, at the age of 94, in Katy, Texas, where she resided. Jewell was born March 8, 1927 in Fordoche, LA. Jewell retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board as a bus drive for 35 years. Her favorite hobbies included cooking, gardening, and crocheting. Jewell was a lifelong member of the Florida Blvd. Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, LA, where she attended for 67 years. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She is survived by her son, Kelly Varnado (Linda of Missouri City, TX); three daughters, Peggy Hammer (Dempsey of Four Seasons, MO), Pam Murphree (Lonnie of Fulshear, TX), and Patsy Broussard (Bert of Anacortes, WA); seven grandchildren, Kelley Allen, Holly Rorick, Haley Robertson, April Schmidt, Theresa McMickle, Christina Scarsorie, and Ryan Broussard; and eight great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, James Morgan Varnado; mother, Sydney Watts Wilmot; father, William R. Bailey, Sr.; and brother, Kenneth Bailey.
Pallbearers will be Lonnie Murphree, Dempsey Hamner, Jared Robertson, JD Schmidt, Bill Bailey, and Ryan Broussard.
Visitation is to be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd. Baton Rouge, LA 70815, from 8:30-10:00am on Friday, December 31, 2021. The funeral service will begin at 10:00am with interment to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
