Doris Andries Davenport

Doris Andries Davenport was born November 5, 1915 and passed away January 4, 2014 at the age of 98. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave, Tuesday January 7, 2014 at 10am with visitation after 9am. Internment in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Many, La. A native of Many, La., Mrs. Davenport resided in Baton Rouge for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late George David Cobbs and Camille Davis Cobbs. She was a retired Louisiana State employee of 34 years. She served as legal secretary under the administration of Attorney's General Eugene Stanley and Fred S. LeBlanc, Sr. In 1948 she became secretary to Senator Russell B. Long who was appointed Executive Counsel to Governor Earl K. Long. She continued in that capacity for 27 consecutive years as legal secretary to Governor Earl K. Long (2 terms), Robert F. Kennon, Jimmie H. Davis, John J. McKeithen (2 terms) and Special Legal Assistant to Governor Edwin W. Edwards retiring in August, 1975, having served five Governors and seven administrations. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and a member of the Sabine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Davenport is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Gregory and wife, Eileen Andries and two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia Andries and husband Kenneth L. Litz, Sr. and Camille Andries and husband Woodrow Higginbotham. Also survived by grandsons, Kenneth L. Litz,, Jr., Michael and Douglas Andries, Trey, Troy and Blake Higginbotham, and Stephen Jorg Andries, two granddaughters, Angela Andries and Jennifer Schiro, seven great granddaughters, Jennie-Carra, Mary-Michael, Anna-Kathryn Andries, Paige Allyse Higginbotham and Hannah, Hailey and Emily Schiro, six great grandsons, Dean, Christopher and Will Higginbotham, Carter Blake and Evan Scott Higginbotham, and Isaiah Andries, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband William Henry Andries and Franklin Pierce Davenport, son, William Stephen Andries, grandsons, Jeffrey Andries, Mark Andries, and R. Scott Litz, her brother George Davis Cobbs, and sisters Anna Cobbs Bryan and Delores Cobbs Youngblood. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
