Darrow “Sonny” Perkins, Sr. was born on January 17, 1940 to the late Millard Perkins and the late Hester Ruth Prater. “Sonny” as family and close friends affectionately called him, was the third of fifteen (15) children.“Sonny” was a very industrious youth growing up taking on odd jobs to do what was necessary to help take care of his mother and siblings. He eventually matriculated through the Baton Rouge public education system. He was an avid reader and spent plenty of time reading and educating himself on many things concerning current events and the issues of life. He confessed his trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior in 1962 and was baptized at the St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church of Baton Rouge. As an adult, he worked various jobs which included being a porter and X-Ray technician at the Baton Rouge General Hospital; working in the shipping department at both Holsum Bakery and Sunbeam Bakery; worked as a Bakery Supervisor at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola; and retired as a Maintenance Supervisor from Wal-Mart. When he wasn’t working or spending time with his family, he took up bowling and had a pretty mean curve ball. He also had great culinary skills and prided himself on making a “Family Pie” for special occasions. “Sonny” was quick to crack a joke or say something that would have you laughing and make you feel good in his presence. His personality was “infectious” and everyone loved being around him. It was nothing for him to enter into a room and light the place up with his personality. He took great pride in his personal appearance and would not leave the house without putting on one of his favorite colognes. On Sunday, September 4, 2016, the Lord called for the soul of Darrow “Sonny” Perkins, Sr. to leave this life and enter into eternal life. He was preceded in death by his father Millard Perkins; his mother Hester Ruth Prater-Hilton; three (3) brothers, Johnny Lee Hilton, Michael Hilton, Glendale Hilton, and two (2) sisters: Betty McFarland, and Diane Hilton.
