Blount Hamilton Grant Jr.

The Reverend Canon Blount Hamilton Grant, Jr. age 90, died Sunday Feb 4, 2024, at Baton Rouge General Mid City ICU. He was born on August 11, 1933, to Lera Graham Hanks Grant and Blount Hamilton Grant, Sr.

He is survived by his loving sister Martha Grant Adams and her children Hamilton Grant Adams and Julia Graham Adams.

Blount attended Sewanee Military Academy and went on to pursue higher education and graduating from University of the South, Sewanee, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, University of Nottingham, England, University of Georgia, and Virginia Theological Seminary, graduated with a master’s in divinity. He was ordained in 1962.

Blount’s life was marked by service, dedication, and a spirit of exploration.

He proudly served the United States Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point demonstrating his dedication to his country.

After his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps, he answered the call to ministry, becoming a devoted Episcopal Priest.

Blount dedicated his life to serving God in various churches across different communities. Throughout his life, he spread his kindness, wisdom and compassion to congregations across the United States and the Bahamas, including St. James, Cedartown Georgia, St. Christopher’s in Havelock, North Carolina, St Michael and All Angels, Stone Mountain, Georgia, St. Ann’s Atlanta Georgia, St. Paul’s Newnan Georgia, Our Lady and St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Bimini Bahamas, St Columba’s, Marathon Florida, St. Francis in the Keys, Big Pine Key Florida, Trinity Cathedral Miami Florida, St. James, Baton Rouge, La.

Blount answered the call to new and exciting ministry in the Diocese of Nassau and the Bahamas, where he served on a tiny island in the middle of the gulf stream called Bimini, known as the Big Game Fishing Capital of the world. While there, his sister and her children spent summers fishing and engaging with the local Bahamians. Island ministry presented challenges but was rich with new experiences.

In 1976, Blount returned to the Episcopal Church, USA finding himself in the Diocese of Southeast Florida, serving on a chain of islands, the Florida Keys. These islands, a crossroads of America and the World, welcomed people from faraway places into the life of the parish church. During his time at St. Columba in Marathon, he exhibited his compassionate nature by installing washers and dryers behind the church for the homeless and needy to wash their clothes, reflecting his commitment to serving his community.

Finally, his crowning years of his ministry were spent as Cannon to the Ordinary of Trinity Cathedral in Miami, Florida another crossroads of the Caribbean, Central and South America. The rich variety and diverse ministry in enchanted places among Gods people were a blessing that stimulated him to continue his ministry in His name.

Blount’s sister and her children also enjoyed spending summer in the Keys, creating lasting memories and friendships that have enriched their lives.

In 1999 Blount came to Baton Rouge, the home of hospitality and wonderful people.

In his final years, Blount’s sister Martha cared for time tirelessly, attending to his every need and ensuring his comfort. He was her world, and her dedication to him was unwavering. If heaven has a stairway, Martha’s name will surely be engraved on it as a testament to her selflessness and love.

Throughout his life, he remained committed to his alma mater, the University of the South, serving on the Board of Sewanee for many years.

Additionally, he was honored to serve as an honorary Deputy with the Monroe County sheriff’s office in the Florida Keys, further demonstrating his dedication to public service and community involvement.

Throughout his life, he embarked on several sabbaticals around the world finding joy and fulfillment in experiencing different cultures. Some of his favorite destinations included Haiti, England, Hawaii, Scotland, and Jerusalem.

He also shared memorable journeys with his sister, traveling to Brazil and China, creating cherished memories together.

He enjoyed trips with nephew Grant, going to England, Latvia, France, and Scotland.

Blount’s dedication to spreading God’s love and his passion for serving diverse communities will leave a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Blount’s ministry was characterized by his kindness, wisdom, and dedication to his congregation. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those he touched.

Special thanks to neighbor Clark Silvey for his unwavering friendship during Blount’s last couple of years. His presence, whether watching TV, listening to music, or sharing an afternoon Starbucks Frappuccino brought comfort and joy to Blount’s days.

The special bond between Blount and his niece Julie is a testament to the power of familial love and understanding. Julie possessed a unique ability to provide comfort and reassurance to Blount, especially during times when he may have felt unsettled or frustrated. Their relationship highlights the importance of supportive family connections and the calming influence that loved ones can have on each other during difficult moments.
