Alvin Lee Bond, affectionately known by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Pops," passed away peacefully while surrounded by members of his immediate family on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at Lane Regional Medical Center, Zachary. Alvin was born on May 28, 1925 in Baton Rouge, and lived in Crosby from the fifth grade until graduating from high school. He served as a member of an Army railroad battalion overseas for 18 months during World War II and was later employed with Illinois Central Railroad as a railroad Engineer for 44 years until retirement. Pops was an avid hunter and fisherman with great love for gardening, flowering and maintaining his yard. He was a true family man who held a deep love for his family and cherished frequent family gatherings. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Julia Bond; sister, Helen Molloy; and two of his three children, Thomas A. Bond and Kay Bond Carline. Alvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris McKee Bond; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Terri Bond; daughter-in-law, Jane Peek Bond; son-in-law, Gordon Carline; as well as close friend of the family for the past 44 years, "adopted daughter," Wanda Millet and her husband, Don. Also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jason Stablier, Carmen Millet, DeSha Botkin, Chela Bilbao, Allen Carline, Rick Bond, Jamie Bond, Lauren Bond, Chase Stablier, Brandt Stablier, Cole Stablier, Landon Botkin, Thomas Botkin and Allen Carline Jr.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Our family would like to express sincere gratitude to Alvin's caregivers, Veronica Mercadal and Adeline Walker. We would also like to give many thanks to the Friendship Village Senior Daycare Center, Baton Rouge, for their love and care for Alvin. In lieu of flowers, our family encourages donations to Disabled Veterans of America or the charity of your choice. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., conducted by Alvin's nephew, Kevin McKee, pastor of Chapel on the Campus. Burial at Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Stablier, Rick Bond, Allen Carline, Raymond McKee Jr., Shawn McKee and Larry "Duffie" Stockwell. Honorary pallbearers are Donald Millet, Gordon Carline, Allen Queen and Gary Stablier. A private wake for family and extended family only will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
