Over the years, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren were added to his loving brood. He loved playing games and reading books to them. One of Jim's fondest memories was being invited to "Read a Book Day" for his great-granddaughter's first grade class. The children all gathered around Jim and hugged him afterwards.

Jim was also well known for his role as the "Master of Revelry" during Limestone's Christmas Madrigal Dinner. He had a true gift for directing the school plays at Limestone. He loved writing stories and composing poetry. After retiring in 2002, he fulfilled his desire to write a book he titled, "The Legend of the Coronado Rock" which was based a lot on of his own childhood experiences.
