He was born November 5, 1945 in Bagley, Minnesota to Roy V. and Doris A. (Davis) Hedman. Darrel married the love of his life, Betty J. King, in Bellevue on November 14, 1971; she survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa (Robb) Peterson of Fargo, North Dakota; sons, Darrel Eric (Sarah) Hedman and Darren (Erin) Hedman; nine grandchildren, Tyler Rumpf, Josephine Hedman, Hope Rumpf, Eliza Hedman, Addisyn Rumpf, Evangeline Hedman, Abraham Hedman, Luke Hedman and Ben Hedman; brothers and sisters, Steve, Fernell, Karen and Barbara.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leroy, and sister, Sharon.
Darrel served his country in the United States Air Force. He was honored with the Air Force Commendation Medal for his distinguished service as a technical instructor at Chanute AFB, where he inspired many through his teaching.
Darrel earned a master’s degree and embarked on a distinguished career at Caterpillar, Inc., where he worked as a computer analyst for 30 years.
In addition to his full-time career, Darrel shared his love of knowledge with students through his part-time teaching positions at Illinois Central College and Bradley University. He also enjoyed serving as a substitute teacher in local schools and with Seapco.
Beyond his professional achievements, Darrel cherished the simple joys of life. He found solace in fishing, golfing, boating, and traveling, often with his beloved family by his side. Darrel’s greatest joy came from his loved ones; they were his constant source of happiness and pride. His family kept him happy all the days of his life.
Darrel also had a love for the local church and spent many hours serving at Faith Missionary Church in Bartonville, IL. He held several positions there including teaching Sunday School, sitting on the missions board, and serving as an elder.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 9 – 11 a.m. at Faith Missionary Church, Bartonville with funeral service to follow. Pastor Craig Hislope and Gary Sweckard will officiate. Burial will conclude at Parkview Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Darrel’s name to Peoria Christian Center, Alpha Park Library, or Faith Missionary Church.
