Patricia Anne Geary Barthel passed away peacefully on April 23, 2024. She was born on December 24, 1938, to Emory Joseph Geary and Anne Louise Mitchell Geary. Pat (Tricie to her family) met the love of her life, William Charles Barthel (Billy), when she was fourteen, and he was fifteen. They married on June 27, 1959, after Billy graduated from Christian Brothers College. The couple settled in Billy’s hometown, Pocahontas, AR and soon had four children. After Billy’s tragic death in 1971, Pat moved the family to Memphis, where she completed college and began a long career as a special education teacher.
Pat was strong, courageous, compassionate, and loving, and was well suited to helping special needs children. She loved all things Irish – the culture, music, dance, literature, and folklore; but she loved her family above everything else.
Pat is survived by her daughters Susan Blackwood, Julie (Mike) Sills, David (Pam) Barthel, and Doug (Kathy) Barthel, her grandchildren, Catie (Matthew) Martin, Emily (Andy) Pang, Hunter Sills, Stephanie (Grant) Willis, Michael Enloe, Chad Barthel, and Drew Barthel, five great-grandchildren, two brothers Peter (Ann) Geary and Paul (Sam) Geary, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Emory (Inger) Geary, Mike Geary, and Tom (Pat) Geary. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN between 4:00 and 6:00. There will be a graveside service on Friday, April 26, beginning at 11:00 at St. Paul’s Cemetery, 801 Weible Street, Pocahontas, AR.
We will forever cherish our memories of Pat’s remarkable character and life and the positive impact she made on all those who knew her.
