Opal was born on November 29, 1934 to Otha and Florence Murray in Ridgely, Tennessee. After graduating from Cloverdale High School in 1952, Opal moved to Memphis where she worked as a bank teller and lived with her sisters and friends.
While living in Memphis, she met Noel Ray Null, and they wed in July 1953. Together, they had 4 children, Noel Lynn, Victor Lionel, Garvin, and Jere Todd.
While Opal worked much of her life, it was her role as mother that she valued the most. She placed her family above all and was the glue that held everyone together. A true Tennessean, she lived most of her adult life in Memphis area. However, she also lived for periods of time in Virginia and most recently, Iowa.
Opal and her departed husband loved to travel and visited many of the states in the lower US, as well as Europe, Canada, and Alaska. She especially loved taking her children and grandchildren to Florida for vacations.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Ray Null, parents Otha B. and Florence Murray, brother Leamon Murray, sister Ruth Hogan, and a granddaughter Ginger Null. She is survived by sister Maxine Crego, brother Jere Murray, sons Noel Lynn Null (Cheryl), Victor Lionel Null (Tina), Garvin Thrice Null, and Jere Todd Null (Ann). She is also survived by grandchildren Justin Null, Derek Null, Angie Brown, Jessica Fredericks, Richard Null, Lauren Null, and Aaron Null, as well as 3 great-grandchildren.
Memorials in Opal’s honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an alternative to flowers.
Family will receive receive friends from 9:00am to 10:00am on Saturday, February 4th at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd, Bartlett, TN. Services will follow at 10:00am. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Ray in the adjacent cemetery after the service.
