Howard Donald Allred Jr. (Donnie), a devout Christian man, has recently left this life and has entered his next life into the arms of Jesus. Howard was a beloved and cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and not to forget, a devoted pet owner. Howard left us peacefully on January 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 17, 1950, to Howard Donald Allred Sr. and Betty J. Allred, Howard grew up in a household filled with love, music, and strong family values, traits that he carried and nurtured throughout his life.
Howard proudly served his country in the United States Army, a testament to his enduring strength and commitment to protection and service. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career at Norfolk Southern Corporation, contributing significantly to numerous projects and initiatives both in Memphis, where he began his career, and in Atlanta, where he later retired. His professional journey was marked by dedication, excellence, and the respect of his colleagues.
Family was the cornerstone of his life, always placing them first and foremost. Howard had a profound love for music, ranging from the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Elvis to all Memphis music, Van Morrison, The Who and so many more. His taste in music was paralleled by his passion for history, family research, golf, and football—especially shared with his beloved wife, Patricia Koch Allred, to whom he was devotedly married for 37 years.
Howard’s strength was in his subtleness, a protector and supporter of his family, friends, and even his four-legged companions, truly a rock for all who knew him. His legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Patricia; his children, Kimberly Allred Lemons, Steven McRoberts, and Stacey McRoberts; his grandchildren, Alexandria Allred, Nathaniel Allred, and Rachelle Payne; and his great-grandchild, Benjamin Allred. He was preceded in death by his brother Steven Clair Allred, his son, James Michael Allred, and his grandson, Charles Blake Feathers. Howard also leaves behind his siblings, Thomas Allred (Tommy) and Barbara Allred-Daniels, mourning the loss of a brother whose life was a beacon of love and generosity and Howard's extended family, the Koch’s and Streed’s.
Among the family members Howard leaves behind is his beloved cat, Max, who was more than a pet but a true companion. Max's presence brought additional joy and comfort to Howard's life, embodying the warmth and unconditional love that Howard himself extended to all he knew.
Howard’s life was enriched by countless friendships forged from his high school days, his career with the railroad, and his band members. He cherished every moment spent with friends in Memphis and Atlanta, grateful for the love and camaraderie that brightened his days. Howard’s legacy of love, strength, and kindness will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Howard’s life will be held Friday, February 9, 2024, with visitation from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, followed by a celebration of life from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, an organization close to Donnie’s heart.
