Charles Arthur Wood, 83, of Arlington, TN, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023, with his wife, Charlotte, by his side. He fought long and hard but eventually his body grew tired and had to let go. Charles knew the Lord and so we are assured he is now with his Heavenly Father.
He was born October 24, 1939, in Senath, MO. He grew up in Senath as well as Arbyrd, MO. He moved to Memphis the day after he graduated high school and never looked back. Always a hard worker, Charles started Arlington Oil Company in 1972 until it’s closure in 1995. He then started his 2nd career with the Shelby County Roads and Bridges Department until his retirement on September 16, 2023. He loved his job and the people who worked with him. When asked about retirement he would always say, ‘Why would I retire? I have somewhere to go, something to do, and they pay me!’.
Charles was devoted to his family. He cherished and loved his wife, Charlotte. They were happily married for 40 years. He is also leaving behind 2 children: Cheryl Haley (Joey) and Billy Crisel, 2 grandchildren: Shelby Young (Derek) and Nicholas Gonzalez, along with 3 great-grandchildren: Mia Young, River Young and Remi Young.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Hobie Don and Wilma Wood, along with his brother, Hobie Don Wood, Jr. (Johnny).
He will be remembered by many as a true friend, always willing to offer a kind word of encouragement or wisdom. He always had something funny to say or a story to tell, along with an unending supply of ‘expressions’. His charismatic personality and beautiful smile will forever be missed until we see him again. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Methodist Hospice Residence.
A visitation for Charles will be held Monday, October 9, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MemphisFuneralGermantownParkway.com for the Wood family.
