Betty Jean Ewing Oliver 91, of Germantown, Tennessee passed away on June 28, 2022, at Methodist Hospital Germantown under the care of Methodist Hospice. Betty was born on January 29, 1931, in Lucy, Tennessee to Wilford D. Ewing and Rose Ella Tate Ewing. She was the youngest of eight children.
Betty married James E. Oliver in 1951 in Santa Ana, California, where he was stationed in the Marines. They traveled to Hawaii, North Carolina, St. Louis and back to California during his service. They returned to Memphis in 1964. Betty was employed by Allstate Insurance and retired from Memphis City Schools in 1993 where she held a position in the Purchasing Department.
During their marriage, Betty and “Billy” owned two homes at Snow Lake Shores in Mississippi. Family members enjoyed many vacations and weekends boating, fishing, swimming and cooking on the grill. Family vacations on the Florida beaches were also special times.
Betty loved going to garage sales in the Germantown area, looking for those special items she “just had to have”. She loved working the in the yard, blowing leaves and pulling weeds. She also loved refinishing furniture, making it look new again.
Betty loved all animals, the squirrels, chipmunks and birds in her back yard, and was known to help more than a few strays, including her cat Punkin who survives her.
Betty is survived by her daughter “chosen with love” Patricia Ewing Jones (David), granddaughter Michelle D. Medes (Steven) and great-granddaughters Maddie and Macie Medes, all of Nashville, Tennessee and her special niece and longtime caretaker, Debbie Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and siblings and her grandson, Jeffery Stout.
There will be a visitation at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd., Bartlett, TN 38133 beginning 10:00 am, Thursday July 7, 2022, a funeral service will follow at 11:00 am and interment will be in Memorial Gardens at 11:30.
