Karen Ann Walker

Born Karen Ann Morey on Jan 29, 1940, in Milwaukee, WI, Karen Walker fed the hungry, protected the innocent, worshipped her God, served her fellow man, counseled her children, and always smiled easily. Her default attitude was a child-like joy, and she was quick to laugh and to help others. She died on June 29, 2023 in Barstow, CA after fighting cancer for several years.

With her natural intelligence and inquisitiveness, she earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1962, proudly championing equality for women and raising her daughters to seek higher education.

In 1964 she married Harvey, a career Army officer. Her Army-wife life led her to live throughout the United States, ending in the Mojave Desert at the Fort Irwin National Training Center, and hence to Barstow.

She was a cheerful stay-at-home mom before returning to work in 1981 as a Supervisor for the San Bernardino County Department of Child Protective Services where she served the High Desert community for 10 years.

In retirement, she continued to help others, working on the team at the soup kitchen at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her skills in genealogy research led her to share her talents as a volunteer at the local LDS Family History Center. She would patiently tutor others in computer skills. She worshipped her God faithfully all her life, taking joy in Catholicism and humbly singing her favorite hymn, "Make me a channel of your peace."

She is survived by her three happy children, Elizabeth (Michael Henry), Margaret, and Daniel (Laura Fowler-Walker), four grandchildren (Mark, Stephanie, Quinn, and Monica), and one great-grandchild, the adorable Hazel. She leaves behind her spouse of 58 years, Harvey J. Walker, Jr., Lt. Col. US Army (ret.), her companion, partner, and friend. As an Army wife she moved her household and children all around the country, at times single-handedly; she has earned the honors of a military spouse and will be interred in the Veterans section of Mountain View Memorial Park in Barstow.
